Royal Enfield Confirms ‘Himalayan’ North America Arrival

Royal Enfield to deliver a simple and affordable mid-sized adventure bike.

Published on 11.20.2017

Royal Enfield is gearing up for a groundbreaking 2018 with the entry of the highly anticipated Himalayan model to the North America market. The Himalayan is purpose-built for adventure while allowing for a less extreme and more accessible form of adventure touring.

“2018 will be a very exciting year for Royal Enfield in North America, as we introduce three entirely new motorcycles. These new motorcycles are fun, easy and affordable — and are perfect for new motorcyclists, veteran riders and everyone in between.” said Rod Copes, President, Royal Enfield, North America.

“Royal Enfield is committed to growing the middle-weight motorcycle segment, and these new motorcycles are exactly what motorcycle enthusiasts have been desiring for years.”

The People’s Adventure Bike

Building on a successful launch overseas in 2017, Royal Enfield North America will bring the popular Himalayan model to US showroom floors in summer of 2018. The Himalayan is purpose-built for adventure with a rugged duplex split cradle frame designed and developed by Harris Performance.

The Himalayan’s 9-inch ground clearance and long-travel suspension allows it to take on trail obstacles comfortably. A 21″/17″ wheel size combination provides better control while riding over rocks and ruts. The Himalayan is powered by a simple air-cooled, overhead camshaft engine platform that forms the base of Royal Enfield’s new long-stroke LS 410 engine. The engine delivers high torque and usable power at lower RPMs that delivers smooth riding in higher gears at lower speeds, making it easier to climb hills with confidence. Modern design and materials translate into increased efficiency and reduced maintenance.

Touring utility is built inherently into the Himalayan. A 4-gallon fuel tank provides a long range of approximately 280 miles. An ergonomically optimized layout for the footpegs, handlebar and seat height produce a comfortable upright riding posture that is necessary for long rides. An accessible 31.5-inch seat height with lower center of gravity and relatively light weight of 401 pounds, ensures ease of planting feet on the ground and more control. The Royal Enfield Himalayan comes fitted with dual-sport tires that lend a confident grip and performance across a range of terrain. Braking control is provided by a large 300mm front and 240mm rear disc, which also help to reduce braking effort.

The Himalayan will be in available in two colors — Graphite and Snow — in the summer of 2018. The model will retail for $4,499 MSRP and a full range of motorcycle accessories will also be available. We look forward to getting an opportunity to test out the new Himalayan this coming spring. Stay tuned for more details!

I’ll test ride it, sure. 400cc single, air cooled : check, fuel injection : check, 9″ clearance : check, 21/17 tires : check, 400 lbs : double check, 4 gal. of regular octane : check, MSRP of $4500 : OK check! Not so much: 24 HP, 26 Ft Lbs Oh well, electric start only hmmmm, 5 speed hmmmm. Overall, I like it! That price, just Wow. Royal has been known to produce good builds for little money and the subcontinent folks have been spending aircraft carrier amounts of cash to purchase branded names (read: patents and mfgr rights) with Ducati maybe next on the block. What I cannot read is, how well they’ll compete with Kaw’s KLR650, Honda XL650, Suz’s DR650 and the like. That price though, wow. The RTW folks who land in US, buy a bike, tour and then sell the bike, I think this will do well in that market at least.

410cc at 24.5hp seems pretty under stressed, I hope this reflects not just in fuel usage, but in reliability as well. Stator output would be good to know. Cool bike though. I’ve been admiring these from afar for some time, glad they’re bring them tonthe US, the 400 class has been largely ignored.

The Royal Enfield website does not give the stator output spec., huh. Also, they say “fuel injection”, but the pictures of the motor, and some of the “Initial India Release” stories report of carburetion. Hmmm.

Biggest competitor will be the Kawasaki versys X300.

I looked at one of these, this last weekend. I agree, it will be competitive. I looked at it, and thought to myself: “I *really* wish Kaw would implement these ideas into their Versys line.

For $3895 you can buy a CSC RX3 Adventure that comes with side cases, top box, engine guards and windscreen. 25hp, 6 speed, watercooled, four valve, fuel injected, counter balanced.

Thanks I’ll stick with my little Versys-X 300 which is vastly more capable off-road than you’d think from looking at it. Besides, wasn’t the RE losing parts during one of its commercial filmings?

Wow. Great concept and execution. Simple, equipped, accessible, durable (no plastic), motorcycle targeted to a broad market. How hard is that to grasp for the big 4. Me thinks this is a wake up call to all colors and that s gona unwillingly make them play follow the leader for a while for ignoring the market. Smart refreshing move from CEO and company Rep.
