REAX Ridge: RevZilla Introduces House Branded Adventure Gear

Retail giant now offering a line of mid-range priced, feature-rich ADV gear.

Published on 04.24.2018

A new gear brand is on the move, but it’s coming from a familiar place… REAX Motorcycle Apparel from the same people that have brought you RevZilla. Retailers selling their own brand of gear isn’t unheard of. Cycle Gear has long had their BiLT and Sedici branded gear lines. That being said, the REAX brand of gear is a first for Revzilla, a major player in the online motorcycle retail space. “We are product geeks and after all the years of ongoing interaction with our customers, it made sense to take that knowledge and perspective and pour it into something of our own,” said Matt Kull, RevZilla co-founder.

RevZilla has partnered with its parent company, COMOTO to bring to life REAX with an overall focus on designs that aren’t overtly technical, but instead, offer a subtle approach to performance and protection. As of right now, the REAX brand has five lines of gear but at ADV Pulse our interest is piqued on their ‘Ridge’ line.

With a jacket, pants, and gloves, the Ridge lineup is directed specifically at the adventure riding segment. Coming in at $897 for the whole kit (jacket: $479 , pants: $289 , and gloves: $129), the REAX Ridge gear offers high-quality construction, well-thought-out features and a clean appearance, at a mid-range price point.

REAX Ridge Jacket: $479

Although understated in its design, the Ridge multi-season Jacket offers riders many features. One of those being the outer shell has the waterproofing built in. There are pros and cons to this set up. First, waterproofing on the outer shell means no need for a waterproof liner and your jacket cannot get soaked. The downside is that you need a lot of venting so you don’t overheat. Yet, with eight, smartly-placed vents guiding air directly to the body, the Ridge Jacket seems to have that covered.

One of the unique features is what they call a wraparound venting system that provides airflow to both the chest and side of the body. There is also a magnetic collar snap that makes opening and closing the collar with a gloved hand much easier. Additionally, the jacket comes with a cool weather liner for warmth called a “destination liner” meaning it can be worn independent of the outer shell, when off the bike, without looking strange. We also really like that they built in some stretch to the whole chassis since burly jackets can be stiff and limit mobility.

The outer shell doesn’t feature a lot of heavy duty abrasion protection, but the internal protection is beefed up. The elbow and shoulder armor is SAS-TEC CE level 2 and there is a back protector pocket ready for separately sold armor. The SAS-TEC protectors are a soft type of protection, but hardens on impact, not unlike D3O armor. Also, the jacket has interior pockets, hand pockets, and a large back cargo pockets for all your stuff.

REAX Ridge Pant: $289

Using the same outer shell as the jacket, the pant is also waterproof and breathable. Not only are there stretch panels for movement, but there is four percent spandex built into chassis as well (same with the jacket). The knee SAS-TEC armor is position adjustable and CE Level 2 rated and the SAS-TEC hip armor is CE Level 1. As with the jacket, the Ridge Pant has plenty of zippered vents to keep air flowing when you need it. Another cool feature is heat resistant material on the inside low sections of the pant. Note that there is no thermal liner for the pant so for cold weather, you’ll have to figure out your own base/mid layer system.

REAX Ridge Glove: $129

Reax Revzilla Adventure Motorcycle Gloves

This matching gauntlet style glove is also waterproof to keep in line with the rest of the Ridge adventure gear. REAX says that this is more of a two to three season glove meaning that it isn’t insulated for dead-of-winter riding and the waterproofing doesn’t allow it to breathe enough for the height-of-the-summer heat. While the gauntlet style adds some arm coverage it is also designed to fit both over and under your jacket sleeve depending on your preference. There is also a super fabric insert with ceramic plates on the goat leather palm. Goat leather, according to REAX, holds up better to getting wet and drying repeatedly and offers a better feel on the grips. The index and thumb are touchscreen compatible and there are vizor and nose wipes on the index and thumb as well.

Overall the REAX Ridge gear looks to be well thought out and it should be. RevZilla has decades of gear experience to pull from to design their own pieces, so we expect this gear to perform accordingly. In our personal experience, house branded gear has been hit and miss, but more hits than misses. And whether you are a diehard brand loyalist, looking to maximize your bang-to-buck ratio, or just want the cheapest gear that gets the job done, we think it is cool that there are more options for us riders and from a company that is entrenched in the motorcycle gear world. We are excited to try this adventure gear out and stay tuned for a review in the the future.
