The KLR650 Makes Top 10 Coolest Adventure Bikes List

The purpose built KLR650 may not turn heads, but is cool in its own right.

Published on 03.15.2014

One of our favorite motorcycle websites Visordown, recently published their “Top 10 Coolest Adventure Bikes” list. One thing we like is that they purposely didn’t include any new expensive Adventure Bikes on their list (sorry no BMW R1200GS). The list contains older, more obscure Adventure Bikes from the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s. Many Adventure Bikes you may never have heard of before.

Suzuki DR Big

One of the coolest Adventure Bikes Suzuki ever produced made the list.

We were not surprised to see some of the bikes on their list like the KTM 950 Adventure, Cagiva Elefant 900 and the Suzuki DR Big. These are classic Adventure Bikes with rich Dakar Rally race heritage and timeless styling.

The big surprise was that the humble Kawasaki KLR650 made the list. Visor Down states, “Any bike that can go two decades without a major update is surely doing something right, and the original 1987-2007 KLR650 achieved just that. The 651cc single is uninspiring, the chassis is simplicity itself and the original styling is utilitarian. But it’s still cool.”

Although the KLR650 may not turn heads, its function first focus has served it well over the years. They offer incredible value as well when you consider for $3,000 US you can have a reliable, long distance adventure touring bike that will take you pretty much anywhere you want to go. We have to agree with Visor Down that it’s one of the coolest Adventure Bikes ever produced.

Thinking that the KTM 640 Adventure and the Cagiva Elefant 650 could be included?…thoughts?

Yeah, not sure you can have a “10 coolest adventure bikes” list without the 640 Adventure. Not only is it cool from a capabilities standpoint, but it is also a downright sexy-looking ride.
