The New Yamaha Ténéré Could Be a Middleweight Triple

Famous designer Oberdan Bezzi sketches a FZ-09 based Ténéré concept.

Published on 02.20.2014

Famous motorcycle designer Oberdan Bezzi has dreamed up a new concept bike that he thinks could be the next Yamaha Ténéré model. Bezzi’s concept is based on the new FZ-09 (MT-09 outside of the U.S.) Naked Bike, which utilizes a 857cc Triple 107 hp engine.

Bezzi has worked with companies like Ducati, Cagiva, Aprilia, Benelli and Moto Guzzi over the years as an outside consultant and has been instrumental in the development of some of their production bikes. For his own pleasure, Bezzi likes to create concept bike sketches that he thinks manufacturers should build. Sometimes Bezzi’s sketches become close predictions of future production models. For example, here is a sketch Bezzi made of a naked version of the BMW S1000RR in 2010 which looks very close to the recently released 2014 S1000R.

A new Yamaha Ténéré Adventure Bike based on the FZ-09 could be a formidable contender in the middleweight category. The new FZ-09 has received praise in reviews recently for its powerful engine and reasonable price tag. The FZ-09 could be the perfect starting platform for building an Adventure Bike, offering the straight-line performance of a liter class bike in a lightweight, off-road capable package. If the reasonable price tag carries over, this bike could dominate the middleweight category.

See below how the FZ-09 compares in weight and power to the current Super Ténéré and other bikes in the middleweight category. Even if the bike were to gain 35 pounds (16 kilos) in Adventure Bike trim, it would still be significantly lighter and more powerful than its competitors.

2013 Yamaha Super Ténéré 1200 578 108 85 $14,800

We can only hope that Oberdan Bezzi is a modern day Nostradamus and Yamaha builds this bike. Yamaha originally designed the 857cc triple engine to be used in multiple bikes and the motorcycle industry is expecting news of a new Yamaha Ténéré model any day now. Chances are this could be a very close rendition of the next Ténéré.

Story Update – 2/21/2014
Oberdan Bezzi has created another version of the Tenere 857cc Triple concept. This would be the off-road focused “Worldcrosser” model with under seat auxiliary tank, crash bars, knobby tires, skid plate and headlight protector.

  1. There is a definite market for this bike – assuming Yamaha doesn’t make the Tenere 600 available in the US.
This bike would replace my V-Strom 650 and offer more offroad capabilities. It would also be an economical alternative to the KTM abd BMW options.

  4. Welcome middleweight Tenere! This version would be sweet with the FZ(MT) 09 mill. That said, given the history (which should remain status quo IMO) of Yamaha Teneres being powered by twin motors, sweeter would be an FZ(MT) 07 based machine for this ADV genre. The FZ07 mill is narrower & has more than acceptable hp/tq #s to run with the BMW/Triumphs etc as is, pending Yamaha kept the weight down on the Tenere 700 which it could easily do. Also, with that crossplane crank it has in it already making the parallel sound like a v-twin it is a natural choice & would be the best sounding middleweight ADV as well!

  5. on first expression the Yamaha FZ-09 looks like your regular naked body. But when it comes to ride and test it, it proves its metal! For the price tag of $8 K, (considering all facts) I say its money well spent. Yes, it doesn’t get any hunkier than this!

  6. I’ve been waiting for the 660 Tenere to come stateside FOR YEARS…. This may be a country of fat people but that doesn’t mean we want to ride fat, cumbersome, too tall, and too wide motorcycles. GIVE US A MID WEIGHT adventure bike! I don’t want to buy a KTM 690!

    • Goodday I am surprised to hear that the 660 is no available in USA it makes no sense not to sell that bike in a country that big .Yamaha needs to rethink its planning all the best from bown under

  7. This bike sounds just about perfect for my needs. Had a Super Tenere but got tired of it. I also ride a big Harley and this would be a perfect companion for daily use without all the bulk. Sorely miss my V-Strom 1000 I sold years ago but this sounds even better.

  9. The Tracer GT is out there already – strip off a few items from the Tenere and slap em on the Tracer. Make the suspension a little more beefy, take the spoke rims off the Tenere (less the shaft drive hub Yamaha can have it back) get rid of the stock exhaust, slap on a can that has some rumble in the jungle and wham bam you got a Bezzi concept come alive.
