Recall Underway on 2019-2020 R1250GS, R1250GSA & Other Models

Multiple BMW GS models recalled for potential leaky front brake calipers.

Published on 08.21.2020

BMW of North America has issued a recall on certain R1250GS models as well as other non-GS models for an issue with leaking front brake calipers. A total of 9,392 BMW motorcycles, for the 2019-2020 model year, may be affected by the recall issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. BMW GS models included in the recall are the 2019-2020 R1250GS and R1250GS Adventure. Other non-GS models in this recall are the 2019-2020 R1250RT, 2020 S1000XR and 2020 S1000RR.

According to the defect report, the front brake calipers may leak brake fluid when parked. As such, these motorcycles fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 122, “Motorcycle Brake Systems.”

What Could Happen

The NHTSA recall report states that overtime, this leak in the calipers can reduce the amount of brake fluid in the brake reservoir. Low brake fluid volume may affect brake performance, increasing the risk of a crash.

How To Get It Fixed

Owners of affected models will be notified and instructed to take their motorcycle to an authorized BMW motorcycle dealer to have it inspected. If necessary, dealers will replace the front brake calipers with an improved version, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin October 6, 2020.

BMW has also issued a stop sale on all vehicles affected by the recall currently in dealer inventory. A process is currently being developed for inspection and repairs related to this issue. Affected VIN’s cannot be sold until the required repair has been completed.

Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153). You can also check your VIN to see if you are affected by the recall at www.nhtsa.gov.

I recently purchased a new 2021 R1250GS Adventure (40th Anniversary). Just before pick up 3rd November I was called by the dealer to say they could not release the bike to me as a result of a STOP order on sale/delivery of a number of R1250 model bikes. He had been called to a nationwide zoom dealer conference to be informed of the issue.

The dealer suggested it was related to the 19/20 model caliper issue but couldn’t back it up with evidence. The dealer also said this had an impact across 70% of the range so was high impact (to him) and no cure has yet been proposed. So I’m sat with no bike and payment made despite his woes. I can’t be the only one. BMW are keeping this super quiet as I cannot find any mention of it.

Hope this is of interest to you. Steve

I was also informed by the dealer that a STOP SALE hold has been put on my 2021 R1250GSA (Triple Black). Dealer claim it is related to the front break oil leak recall. The production date 10/5/20. BMW suggested to the dealer to inform the customer(s) that is will not be several weeks but months before this is resolve. I know of 2 other 2021 GSA customers at the same boat. One is already on the dealer’s floor.

Yes, I have a 2021 R1250GSA Anniversary Edition sitting at the dealer since Oct. 27. Still no word when I can take delivery. Very poor customer service by BMW. Sad possible future owner.

Hi Steve,

I was told in mid January, 2021, that BMW motorcycle dealerships were not allowed to release any 2021 GS 1250’s due to a recall regarding the front brakes. The only info I was able to pull up regarding the recall, only pertained to 2019 & 2020 bikes.
As of last week, Feb 5th, my dealer alerted me that BMW were fixing the problem by replacing the front brakes with Brembo brakes, and that BMW had sent out the brakes to the dealerships for them to instal on all their 2021 bikes.
I was hoping that BMW would offer some sort of incentive to those that placed deposits on their bikes, and or, those who had already purchased the bike but cant ride them. As of now, BMW has no plans to offer anything as an act of good faith..
The dealership is pushing for me to complete the sale by the end of February. However, I am in no rush to do anything until I can ride the bike out of the showroom.

The dealership is an idiot to attempt to rush you into the purchase without concessions. Tell them you will sign on the dotted line if they drop the price $1500.00 for not being able to ride the bike. In addition, I would hold them to a hard date when you can ride off with it and if they do not perform to that date, you have the right to break the contract with no consequences due to breach of contract. Good luck. I am in this very same position with a S1000RR.

What good it is to have 2021 R1250GSA models and have them all with a stop sale on them. Poor planning by BMW.

I just bought one from Sandia Albuquerque NM and was told they have already done the work on the GSA. I have ridden about 600 miles and the front disk got so hot that the disk turned blue. The disk is now chipping on the the edges.

Either the dealer did not do the job right or the parts used are defective.

I got my notice for my 2019 R1250GSA and called the dealer (a 4.5 hr drive away from me in NY). My 2019 has 13,000 mi and I am second owner since 9,000. Front brakes are great and I have done a variety of off and on-road riding and some pretty speedy sport riding (bike does it ALL as you know). I will watch the front calipers and hose fittings for signs or a level drop in the master cylinder or a spongy lever. Don’t say if this ends is a quick loss of brakes so it must be weeping seal or fitting. Lawsuit issue keeping the new bikes on the floor but this 2019 is being ridden and watched. Costs me $$ to get it there for service so may wait until the solution is known better and my bike does not end up sitting waiting too.

I’ve just bought a R-1250-rt. No leaking but the brakes has a cheap feel no progresivity at all. I also have a friend who received in January a December made gs 1250 triple black low suspension. He made 10 km an leaking is visible on one of the front brakes. They propose to change the brake etriers within a newer one but not brembo.
