ADV Destinations: Alstrom Point, A Remote Gem Above Lake Powell
A rugged ride to one of Utah’s most surreal overlooks.

It’s hard to overstate the visual impact of Alstrom Point. Tucked deep within Utah’s Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, this remote overlook offers one of the most dramatic panoramas in the Southwest—where jagged, multicolored cliffs plunge into the vivid blues of Lake Powell.

The ride getting there can be challenging at times for bigger adventure bikes due to deep sand and rocks on the final stretch but once you reach the end of the road, the landscape opens up in spectacular fashion. Towering rock formations rise from the lake below, framed by layers of red, orange, and purple sandstone. The view stretches for miles, with Lake Powell’s winding arms carving through the desert like veins of turquoise.
Sunset and sunrise are particularly magical here. As the light shifts, the cliffs glow with an otherworldly palette, and the lake reflects the sky in surreal hues. It’s a photographer’s dream—and a moment of quiet awe for any rider who’s made the trek.

Camping is allowed, and while there are no facilities, the remoteness adds to the experience. The terrain is stark and treeless, yet dotted with self-styled, unimproved campsites carved out by generations of 4×4 travelers. With a bit of foraging, riders can often find leftover firewood, perfect for building a bed of coals to cook a steak dinner under a star-filled sky. The silence at night is profound, broken only by wind and the occasional echo off canyon walls.
For adventure riders willing to tackle the rugged approach, camping along the cliffs of Alstrom Point offers a rare combination of solitude, challenge, and cinematic beauty.
