ADV Destinations: Buck Rock Lookout Sequoia National Forest
A must-see scenic stop for ADV riders exploring California’s backcountry.

Sitting precariously in the sky at 8,500 feet above sea level in the heart of California’s Sequoia National Forest, Buck Rock Lookout is more than just a scenic perch—it’s a bucket list destination for adventure riders seeking epic views, rugged trails, and a dose of interesting history in California’s backcountry.
Built in 1923, Buck Rock Lookout is part of the U.S. Forest Service’s historic fire lookout system—a network of towers that serves as the eyes of wildfire detection across the American West. Suspended atop a sheer granite dome, the lookout is accessed via a dramatic staircase bolted into the rock face. The structure has been preserved for over 100 years and is still staffed during fire season, offering visitors a glimpse into a bygone era of forest stewardship.

Buck Rock Lookout is reachable via a mix of forest roads and challenging trails, with route options that suit a variety of skill levels. The ride there is part of the experience — winding dirt roads, rocky climbs, and tree-lined corridors lead to a granite outcrop, where expansive views of the Sierra Nevada await.
Those seeking technically challenging trails can navigate the adjacent Buck Rock Jeep Trail (Forest Road 14S47). This rugged route features loose rock, steep grades, and tight switchbacks — perfect for intermediate to advanced riders on smaller machines. Alternatively, Forest Road 13S04 offers scenic, less demanding access for those looking to soak in the views.

After navigating the rugged trails to Buck Rock, riders park at the base and embark on a short but scenic hike up to the staircase for the lookout. It’s the perfect opportunity to stretch your legs as you climb up 172 steep steps to the 14’ x 14’ cab. It’s more than manageable in motorcycle boots and the reward makes it well worth it: a 360-degree view that stretches across alpine peaks, deep canyons, and endless forest. On clear days, you can see the 14,000 foot peaks around Mount Whitney to the east and the San Joaquin Valley to the west.

The surrounding area is rich with camping opportunities, including Big Meadow Campground and dispersed sites along Forest Roads leading to the lookout. Nearby destinations like Hume Lake, the Grant Grove, and the iconic General Sherman Tree in Sequoia National Park offer additional opportunities for exploration on a multi-day ADV ride.
Today Buck Rock Lookout is one of the few remaining fire lookouts that continues to be staffed by the Forest Service, while receiving thousands of visitors every summer. The lookout is typically open daily to the public from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm during the fire season (late June – October), depending on snowpack and road conditions. Summer and early fall are ideal, with warm days, cool nights, and minimal precipitation.
