Ducati Unveils Next-Gen DesertX V2 At EICMA 2025
A lighter DesertX is coming soon with improved chassis and new V2 powerplant.

Four years after Ducati’s bold entry into the dirt-focused adventure segment with the original DesertX, the Bologna-based manufacturer has returned to EICMA with a preview of its next-generation model. The new DesertX builds on the DNA of its predecessor—21”/18” wheelset, rally-inspired design, and off-road intent—while introducing several technical upgrades aimed at improving performance both on and off the trail.

One of the biggest changes is the engine. At the heart of the 2026 DesertX is Ducati’s new 890cc V2 IVT powerplant, replacing the current 937cc Testastretta. The IVT (Intake Variable Timing) system is designed to offer linear torque delivery even at low revs, along with a prompt throttle response and sportbike-like engine performance at high revs. The new IVT unit produces a claimed 110 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 68 ft-lbs of torque at 7,000 rpm. While the max power output compared to the outgoing Testastretta L-twin remains essentially unchanged (previously 110 hp and 68 lb-ft), more than 70% of max torque is already available at 3,000 rpm. Moreover, above 3,500 rpm the torque value never drops below 80%.

Another notable change lies in the suspension architecture. Ducati has adopted a progressive rear linkage system, featuring a linkage arm under the seat that connects to a long rod going down to the redesigned swingarm. It’s a unique setup unlike anything we’ve seen before on an adventure bike and it suggests a ground-up reengineering of the chassis. Ducati emphasized that changes are designed to enhance off-road compliance while preserving the bike’s road manners.

The next-gen DesertX is also lighter. Ducati reports a wet weight (without fuel) of 454 pounds, making the new model 9 pounds lighter than its predecessor, offering the promise of improved agility in technical terrain.

Styling updates are also evident, though Ducati has kept the final look under wraps. The DesertX on display featured camouflage graphics that obscure finer details, but a subtle departure from the signature dual round headlight design is clearly visible. The circular headlamp motif remains, albeit with squared off top and bottom edges.

A new TFT display appears on the show bike featuring a horizontal rather than vertical orientation. The rally-style vertical display was a key design element of the original DesertX, so it will be interesting to see if that gets dropped in the final design. Another visible change is a large steering damper appearing in front of the fuel tank and a GPS mounting bar over the dash.

This unveiling at EICMA 2025 follows months of speculation, including spy shots of the DesertX prototype captured last month. Those images hinted at a slimmer profile and revised ergonomics, which now appear to be confirmed by the prototype’s compact stance and streamlined bodywork. Ducati’s decision to retain the 21”/18” wheelset, suspension improvements and a reduction in weight underscore its commitment to off-road capability.

Other specs still remain underwraps but hopefully Ducati will continue offering the 2.1-gallon auxiliary rear fuel tank—a unique rally-inspired option that set the DesertX apart.

Ducati has announced that complete details will be released in February 2026. The bike is expected to hit dealerships by May of 2026. Stay tuned for more updates as Ducati prepares for the full reveal of the 2nd-generation DesertX early next year.

Ducati needs to keep these camouflage graphics as an option. I was hoping for a longer valve adjustment term, but you cant have everything.
Soooo….have they fixed the insane air filter access? Love the lines and the updates, love the bike, but the filter maintenance was the deal breaker for me.
