KTM Freeride E Becomes A Street-Legal Dual Sport In All 50 States
The second generation of KTM's electric enduro is back in the lineup with a plate.
KTM’s electric off‑road platform enters a new phase for 2027 as the next-gen Freeride E breaks cover as a 50-state-legal dual sport, expanding where and how riders can use the lightweight machine. The update arrives alongside several other changes including gains in range, performance, and chassis refinements, signaling KTM’s continued push to evolve its electric lineup.

For 2027 the model sees an updated drivetrain delivering 19.2 kW (25.7 hp) of peak power and 37.6 Nm (27.7 ft-lbs) of torque, managed through three ride modes and three levels of energy recuperation to help stretch range on mixed terrain. A rollover sensor and adjustable traction control round out the updated electronics package, with clear LED indicators relaying system status.

KTM also reports a modest battery capacity bump, now offering 5.5 kWh from the brand’s latest MX50 Lithium‑Ion pack. Typical riding time remains in the 2–3 hour Enduro range, but the improved recuperation settings help stretch the range time by a claimed 20%. KTM says the pack is designed to withstand over 1,000 charge cycles before dropping to 80% effectiveness. The swappable‑battery design continues, with charging times ranging from 8 hours on a 660 W charger to 1.5 hours with the optional 3.3 kW power unit. Removing the battery takes less than 10 minutes.
Chassis updates complement the power management refinements. The bike sheds weight for 2027, coming in at 246.9 lb (112 kg) while retaining its chrome‑molybdenum steel frame and aluminum/glass‑fiber‑reinforced nylon subframe. Seat height lands at 35.8 inches, and the latest WP XACT 43mm fork and XPLOR PDS rear shock work with 21/18‑inch aluminum wheels to keep the bike agile and predictable off‑road. Braketec brakes and Michelin Enduro Medium tires round out the package, reinforcing the Freeride E’s dirt‑first intentions, even as it gains the ability to legally connect trails or navigate town.
