Moto-Skiveez: Next Level Comfort in Padded Motorcycle Shorts

Can a single product put an end to seating discomfort once and for all?

Published on 08.21.2014

It happens like clockwork. About an hour into a long stretch of highway the squirming begins, as you shift your weight and change your seating position in an effort to find some relief from the soreness. Add a little moisture, and a sore tush becomes the least of your problems. Humidity, sweat or water seepage can create a swamp-like environment in your pants that leads to irritation and chafing on your most sensitive parts.

There are several different remedies for seating discomfort, ranging from powders and creams to aftermarket seats, but they all tend to solve just one of your problems. If you want to prevent soreness, irritation, chafing and rashes with a single product, then a good set of padded motorcycle shorts is your best bet.

Advanced Sportswear Technology

A new type of padded motorcycle shorts have generated a lot of buzz in the Adventure Motorcycle community. Moto-Skiveez are some of the most advanced padded shorts for motorcycle riding ever produced, promising a new level of comfort beyond anything else on the market.

The founder of Moto-Skiveez, Shawn Lupcho, spent 20 years as a competitive cyclist and 35 years riding motorcycles. It was surprising to him that he could ride all day comfortably on a lightly-padded bicycle seat, but sitting on a motorcycle seat for a relatively short time gave him discomfort. He knew padded cycling shorts were the key to maintaining comfort on a bicycle, but the same shorts were ineffective for motorcycles because they were designed for a different seat and body position.

TMF Research Center Testing Padded Motorcycle Shorts

Computer sensors and thermal cameras detect hot spots on an Adventure Bike seat at the TMF Research Center

Shawn realized the advanced technology developed for cycling shorts could be brought to bear on the seating discomfort issues faced by motorcyclists, and the Moto-Skiveez company was formed. Moto-Skiveez enlisted the help of the TMF Research Center, a leader in cutting-edge technology for competitive cycling sportswear for the last 30 years. TMF utilized a range of computer sensors and thermal cameras at their Italian facility to analyze pressure points and hot spots that occur while riding a motorcycle.

Three styles of padded motorcycle shorts were engineered for the different seating positions and riding styles of Sport Bike, Cruiser and Adventure Motorcycles. The Adventure Bike specific “Adventure Skiveez” are optimized for an upright riding posture with feet positioned directly below the seat. The patent pending Adventure Skiveez pad is the most complex of all of their designs.

First Impressions

Moto-Skiveez padded shorts for motorcycle riding

Moto-Skiveez are constructed with durable materials and reinforced stitching, but are soft and comfortable on your skin.

Visually the Moto-Skiveez look like a set of stylish athletic shorts. Inspecting them further, you can see the amount of padding used is moderate but it covers a much larger area than your typical cycling shorts. The precisely stitched seams demonstrate the high-quality construction of the product. We were happy to see there were no tight elastic bands around the leg openings, which are commonly found on cycling shorts.

After slipping on a pair of Moto-Skiveez, you instantly notice the plush feel of the material. The padding can be felt when walking around, but they feel much more like underwear than tight cycling shorts.

Riding With Moto-Skiveez

We tested the Moto-Skiveez padded motorcycle shorts over several weeks of riding that included both technical off-road and long highway stretches. During the ride, the padding felt perfectly placed and there were no rough edges or seams; just a silky-soft feeling without any sponginess that could reduce your sense of road grip.

We pushed the length of our rides beyond the point when we’d normally feel discomfort, but the soreness never came. It was easy to forget we were testing the Moto-Skiveez because there was no pain or irritation to remind us.

One of the things we were eager to test was the ability of the Moto-Skiveez to handle moisture. Riding in the middle of summer in Southern California, temperatures frequently rise above 90°F (32°C) and it’s easy to start sweating. The Moto-Skiveez maintained a cool, dry feeling at all times and we never experienced Monkey Butt.

On one occasion we got caught in a freak summer storm that drenched us to the bone. Even though the Moto-Skiveez were completely wet, we never had any skin irritation or chafing. The Moto-Skiveez started to dry out about an hour after the rain stopped. When we arrived at our destination a few hours later, they were only slightly damp to the touch.

Hang Drying Moto-Skiveez padded shorts for motorcycle riding

Moto-Skiveez dry quickly after getting wet or washing.

We’re not sure if it’s the breathability of the fabric or the anti-microbial pad, but the Moto-Skiveez do seem to keep fresher for a long time than other padded motorcycle shorts we’ve tried. This can be very important when you ride in remote areas where you don’t have an opportunity to wash your undergarments regularly.

We tried washing a pair Moto-Skiveez along with a pair of padded cycling shorts to see how quickly each would dry. The Moto-Skiveez were dry enough to wear after just a few hours, while the cycling shorts still felt too moist to consider putting on.

A Complete Solution for Seating Discomfort

Moto-Skiveez impressed us with how well they work and we can say the product lives up to its marketing claims. The company has thoroughly analyzed the seating discomfort issues experienced by Adventure Riders and integrated solutions into their product to resolve each problem.

Clearly, a lot of innovative technology has been applied to these padded motorcycle shorts. The result is you can enjoy longer journeys in greater comfort, without having to stop and get out of the saddle to rest as often. With aftermarket seats ranging in cost from $400 to $1,000, Moto-Skiveez are definitely worth giving a try at $65.

Company Founder Describes Moto-Skiveez Tech

News Update:

Moto-Skiveez is one company that listens to their customers and continuously looks for ways to improve their products. Lately, they’ve been hard at work updating their motorcycle shorts to ensure they provide maximum comfort for an even wider range of body types. Here are some of the recent updates:

Adventure-Skiveez: Some felt the pad in the Adventure-Skiveez had a tendency to fold inward when walking around. A new pad design helps eliminate this inward folding to improve comfort off the bike. The waistband in the Adventure-Skiveez has also been raised about an inch in the larger sizes to help big guys keep all their assets covered.

Cruiser-Skiveez: A new and improved pad design offers even more comfort for cruiser riders. Padding in the Cruiser-Skiveez has been increased around the bony part of the butt (ischial tuberocity) to provide a broader area of pressure relief. The pad has also been re-positioned to provide even greater comfort around the tail bone area.

Lady-Skiveez: Moto-Skiveez now offers their padded motorcycle shorts in a design specifically made for the female anatomy. Using a single layer of proprietary foam, a multi-density pad is created for all riding styles. The breathable, lightweight undergarment provides optimal comfort for women on long-distance rides.

I have a pair and really like them as well. I would feel better about recommending them if they were made in USA vs. China. At $60 a pair I think that is do-able.

The base shorts are sourced from China. However, the padding is from Italy and the final product is sewn together in the USA. The company reports spending 12 months trying to find a source for the base shorts in the USA, but could not find a quality product that was a good match for their designs.
