GasGas To Launch Two New 700cc Street-Legal Models for 2022

The Pierer-owned brand's first street legal bikes will be an enduro and supermoto.

Published on 02.25.2022

It appears KTM and Husqvarna’s sister brand GasGas may be arriving fashionably late to the 2022 new model party, specifically by bringing a street-legal enduro GasGas ES 700 and supermoto SM 700 to the U.S. and world market. This, reported by motorcycle.com, based on “vehicle identification number (VIN) decoder information submitted to the U.S. by KTM” on February 16th, 2022.

The cover letter and document directed to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), shows these two listings for “22/23” model years under the GasGas “GG” brand listing as “street legal” models, a first for the Pierer-owned Spanish brand, famous for its trials, MX and rally raid machines.

GasGas street-legal motorcycles coming

Of course, we suspected dual-sport machines from GasGas would be coming after it was purchased in 2019 by the Pierer Mobility Group, parent company of KTM and Husqvarna, and serial cross-pollination of its house brands. What we were expecting, however, were two 800cc models, one a naked street bike and the other an adventure touring model, after they were promoted in investor documents that were leaked late in 2019.

Yet judging by the model names in this new document, those intentions were scraped in favor of an Enduro “ES” model, which undoubtedly would share much with KTM’s 690 Enduro R and Husqvarna’s 701 Enduro (the latter is not currently available in the U.S. for 2022), while the “SM” GasGas bike would be a spin-off of KTM’s 690 SMC R and Husqvarna’s 701 Supermoto.

The report also shows two dealers in GasGas’s home country of Spain have already listed the ES and SM bikes on their respective websites, making their future seem certain. Both bikes are listed in Euros at €10,749, and if you rely on today’s conversion, that’s US $12,036, about $500 less than KTM North America’s $12,499 base unit pricing for both the 690 SMC R, 690 Enduro R, as well as Husky’s 701 Supermoto. Another dealer, this one in Ukraine, has the GasGas SM model listed even closer in price to its existing brethren, at UAH 375,020 (US $12,562) and the ES, UAH 371,960 UAH (US $12,459).

So, it’s safe to assume prices for the future GasGas SuperMoto and Enduro will be in the same neighborhood as their siblings, and of course the motorcycles themselves will also be analogous to their KTM and Husqvarna counterparts, though not identical. Differences might include suspension tuning, electronics, ergonomics and, of course, graphics and colors.

We already know which brand Sammy Hagar would choose.

While it seems a bit late in the 2022 season for these GasGas models — which have yet to be officially announced — to find their way onto showroom floors this year, it is excellent timing for GasGas to use its first-ever win in Dakar 2022 to secure a standing in the hearts and minds of dual sport riders around the world. Because, c’mon, if the Red brand’s good enough for two-time Dakar champ Sam Sunderland, it’s good enough for us.

10 points for the Hagar reference.

The 701 Enduro had disappeared from the US Husqvarna website, and there are no 2022 701 Enduros coming into the US. On the KTM side, dealers only got a tiny fraction of their expected 690 enduro allocation, with no more expected to be delivered in the US this year. My money is KTM will officially drop the 701/690 enduros models in the US and only the GasGas ES700 will be available starting in 2023.

A 700cc single cylinder travel enduro? Is this the bike KTM should have build a long time ago?

I’m betting it is the bike KTM built a long time ago. Looking like Perier has a case of 80’s GM badge engineering fever.
