Watch: Testing The New KTM 390 Adventure R
KTM’s smallest ADV gets the “R” badge along with big upgrades for both street & dirt.
For years, fans of KTM’s entry‑level ADV machine asked for more off‑road chops—and KTM has finally responded. The all-new 390 Adventure R arrives as a ground‑up overhaul, bringing rally‑inspired bodywork, a new steel trellis frame, spoked 21/18 wheels, and 9 inches of suspension travel front and rear. Ground clearance rises by 2.4 inches while seat height increases only half an inch, keeping the bike approachable yet far more capable in the dirt.

Power comes from KTM’s stroked 399cc LC4c single‑cylinder engine, producing 44 horsepower and 29 ft‑lbs of torque. While peak output remains similar to the outgoing model, the revised mill delivers stronger mid‑range punch, making highway cruising and off‑road climbs more manageable. At 388 pounds wet and priced at $6,999, the 390 Adventure R positions itself as KTM’s gateway ADV machine. A slipper clutch, ride‑by‑wire throttle, lean‑sensitive ABS and traction control, selectable ride modes,a crisp 5‑inch TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity and optional quickshifter add refinement to the package. Riders also benefit from optional cruise control, lean‑sensitive ABS and traction control, selectable ride modes, and a crisp 5‑inch TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity.

The video review highlights these updates in action, showing the bike’s rally‑inspired handling, improved suspension, enhanced electronics across varied terrain, and more. During our evaluation, we seek answers to all the most common questions like, how much the added suspension travel and larger wheels improve performance in aggressive terrain? Did the new rubber-mounted mill keep vibrations in check on the highway? Does the new electronics package offer improved confidence in the dirt?
