Suzuki Unveils New V-Strom 1050DE With More Off-Road Capability

The flagship adventurer gets 21” front, taller suspension, new tech, and more!

Published on 09.05.2022

Suzuki has unveiled their next-generation V-Strom 1050 range, which drops the previous XT for a new DE model with more off-road prowess and additional features. The host of revisions include changes to the engine, transmission, suspension, chassis, plus new tech has been added to expand its versatility.

First up, the 2023 V-Strom 1050DE swaps the old 19-inch front wheel for a more off-road friendly 21-incher. The DE also gains 0.4-inches (10mm) of suspension travel in the front and 0.3 inches (8 mm) in the rear, plus 1.2-inches of ground clearance over the previous XT model. Because of the DE’s taller stance, the bike is equipped with longer, model-specific side- and center-stands. A new engine protector, constructed of 3 mm (0.12 in.) aluminum plate, shields the front and bottom of the frame, exhaust header, and engine from trail debris.

Chassis revisions also include a longer swingarm with 10% more torsional rigidity, which along with the bigger front wheel and increased suspension travel contribute to a larger rake and wheelbase for more stability in the dirt. Larger steel foot pegs as well as a 1.57-inch wider and thicker handlebar further improves rider control when negotiating rough terrain. The V-Strom 1050DE also uses a new sub-frame with stronger seat rails and rear fender brackets for improved impact-resistance during off-road use. And an updated seat with a new bottom shape  is designed to better accommodate input load when riding on unpaved surfaces, while offering a 34.6-inch seat height.

The 2023 bike also gains a new 5” color- TFT display as well as an expanded Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (SIRS) which includes the already existing six-axis IMU and an all-new ‘Gravel Mode’ that retards ignition timing to help the rider better negotiate gravel roads by allowing some slip when riding on unpaved surfaces. Also new is the ability to switch off rear ABS as well as the addition of a bi-directional Quick Shift System (QS) which allows the rider to shift up or down quickly and easily, without operating the clutch or throttle.

While the 1037cc powerplant still churns out 107 ponies, the engine has been tweaked to employ hollow sodium-filled exhaust valves —- a first for Suzuki motorcycles. These valves help reduce temperature in the combustion chamber, improving flow efficiency and durability.

The Engine Control Module has also received new programming to efficiently operate the EFI system. In addition, the Ride-by-Wire electronic throttle is updated to better balance the relationship between throttle action and engine output characteristics. The grip return force is also recalibrated to provide better feel and control to the rider.

The cruise control system has also been revised and now maintains the selected road speed without the rider having to hold the throttle open. More advanced than the system used on the previous V-STROM 1050XT, cruising speed can be set when riding in second gear or higher at engine speed of 2,000 to 7,000 RPM or when riding between 30 MPH to 100 MPH in fourth gear or higher. This translates to cruising speed range options of approximately 15 to 100 MPH (25 to 160 km/h). Plus, a button on the right handlebar control can be pressed to put cruise control into standby, and a rocker-style selector switch on the left handlebar control lets the rider set the cruising speed, adjust the speed up or down, or resume to the preset speed. Cruise control function icons and indicators are located on the TFT instrument panel.

The 2023 V-Strom 1050DE also benefits from a revised transmission with higher gear ratios in first and sixth gear that smooth the shift action into second and higher gears. This increases the sensation of acceleration to the rider when opening the throttle. The flagship adventurer also features a new stronger and longer O-ring style drive chain (RK525 x 120L) which contains lubrication pre-packed between the pins and rollers for quiet, reliable operation.

Joining the DE model for 2023 will be the cast-wheeled standard V-Strom 1050, which shares some of the DE updates such as the revised transmission, updated TFT, engine tweaks, revised ride-by-wire system, updated cruise control and new bi-directional quick shifter. What it doesn’t share are the more off-road focused changes such as the increase in ground clearance, taller suspension, 21-inch front wheel, Gravel mode, ability to switch off rear ABS, longer wheelbase, shorter windscreen, increased rake, wider handlebars, and larger footpegs. A third variant called the V-Strom 1050 Adventure will also join the lineup which is equipped with all the DE updates plus travel accessories such as aluminum panniers and LED fog lights.

looks like it has the hardware to succeed, decent power, tubeless spoked wheels, proper cruise control, switchable ABS, a quickshifter and good luggage options. id like another gallon of fuel in the tank 5.3 might get your 200 miles maybe. I prefer 250 or better. and its going to have to compete with the africa twin adventure sport in the “not a GS” category, with less fuel range, no smartphone integration and no DCT theyre going to have to price it well below the africa twin to move many units in the big ADV market.

252kg!? Yikes! I hope there’s enough horsepower to make it worthwhile. My 2018 KTM SAR is 240kg, which is still too heavy for me to lift, but at least it has 160hp.

The suspension travel is less than 1/2 in. more than the standard model. How much more off road capable can it be? I don’t see the point for this bike unless Suzuki just wants to creep a little closer to the Honda AT. I can see the new parallel twin 700 having a T7 esq version for more serious off road work though. Wonder if they will transition the big V twin to a P twin as well.

21″ wheel vs 19″, spoke-wheels vs cast, more ground clearance, longer wheelbase, increased rake, gravel mode, wider handlebars, ability to turn off rear ABS etc. So yes, besides the taller suspension there are many notable off-road focused changes that make it a lot more dirt capable than the standard.

The front wheel has regular spokes and is tubed, but the rear wheel is cross-spoked tubeless. 170mm suspension travel and 190mm ground clearance with a 252kg wet weight. This is pathetic.

Suzuki is really half @ss’n it in the dual sport market. There are a lot better options than this offering. Hopefully this new parallel twin 700 suzuki is building is something to get excited about.

Is that suspension travel a typo?

No regrets trading my vStrom in for a Africa Twin last year. VStrom is wonderful bike, but off-road not so much, new vStrom looks like slight improvement but no match for the competition.

Take a shot of whisky for every “gravel and flat dirt surfaces” and you’d be drunk by the end. Nice updates, but tubeless spoked rims would have been nice.

Is it just me, or do those side cases look to be very far forward? They look like there is not much room for the rider to move back on the seat. I notice there are no pics of rider on a luggage equipped bike.

The videos included in the article show footage of a rider on a bike equipped with panniers. Seems fine.
