LS2 Launches ADV Helmet with Drop-Down Sun Visor Under $150

A new rally-inspired Dual Sport helmet for dirt-focused adventure riders.

Published on 06.03.2016

One of the most important new products in the LS2 2016 collection is the Pioneer MX436, a helmet that derives from the Spanish company’s long-term experience in the off-road sector and particularly in tough, long rallies such as the famous Dakar. The Pioneer MX436 is particularly suitable for Dual Sport riders. The sun peak, external visor, drop-down internal sun visor and removable, washable liners make it suitable for both road and off-road use. A wide eye port accommodates most major brands of goggles as well.

The external shell is molded in three sizes in KPA (Kinetic Polymer Alloy) a blend of thermoplastic resins and fiber. The material is exceptionally lightweight and flexible, able to absorb the energy resulting from an impact and resist penetration. The internal shell, which comes in three sizes for the best possible fit, is molded in EPS with different densities for optimal energy absorption properties.

The external visor is anti-scratch and anti-UV, molded with special polymers that make it particularly resistant to impacts. There is no optical distortion (3D Optically Correct). LS2 has designed and developed a new and effective anti-fog system that is based on a new film, known as FFS (Fog Fighter System). This helmet is also equipped with the exclusive TSS (Twin Shield System) that, thanks to a drop-down internal sun visor, ensures riding in the correct light and in maximum safety.

The ventilation system allows fresh air to enter through the upper air vents and the vent positioned on the chin, while hot air exits via three rear extractors. All of this is facilitated by air channels in the polystyrene internal shell.

The internal liners are completely removable and washable and produced in hypoallergenic, odourless, breathable fabrics, with laser-cut foam sponges for a superior fit against the rider’s face. To join the fabrics to the laser-cut sponges, no glue is used, so that air can circulate more easily.

The MX436 strap system benefits from the new micrometric quick release buckle. A ribbed plastic tab slides easily inside a metal buckle for a perfect fit and is quickly released with a convenient pull tab. Also included are quick-pull emergency release cheek pads that help emergency responders safely remove the helmet.

As with all LS2 helmets, the Pioneer MX436 meets or exceeds DOT and ECE 22.05 standards and it is available in sizes ranging from XXS to 3XL. MSRP for the MX436 is $164.95 for solid and $174.95 for graphics but we have seen it available online for as low as $129 for solid colors and just $139 for graphics.

At the price it’s hard not to get excited about this helmet. That said, despite LS2’s claims early reviews I read said the shield was not optical perfect. Until I can see/wear one in person to confirm or deny this, I’ll hold off… even at that steal of a price.

I have an mx-453, and they claimed the same for that model.. The visor is terrible for optics, as well as sealing vs wind & rain. Also the visor is hard to remove, and to get the face shield off you have to get that off first. I’ve not even bothered yet..

Are there better offerings in a long oval?

The shape is a strong draw for me to test one of these.
