A 600-mile adventure through some of Arizona's most scenic landscapes.

Published on 02.25.2021

As Winter weather starts to kick in, you need not look further than Arizona for your dual sport riding adventure fix. An extra layer at morning departure will likely be shed as the day progresses and with the chance of rainfall pretty slim, sunny conditions and mid-winter highs in the low 70’s the norm, central Arizona gives you ideal riding weather.

MotoDiscovery, one of the oldest motorcycle tour operators in the world running global motorcycle tours and expeditions since 1981, has picked up on the allure of Arizona, staging mid-winter and early-spring 5-day rides originating out of Phoenix. You can use your own motorcycle however, MotoDiscovery has recently opened a rental operation out of Phoenix, making “fly-n-ride” a seamless and convenient quick getaway to some sunshine and American Southwest magic.

The region offers the kind of riding diversity that dual sport and adventure riders crave. Exploring the deserts among forests of giant saguaro cactus is to be expected, but your day will also include venturing in and around surrounding mountains. The terrain offers some degree of challenge, so this one is not recommended for the novice off-road rider and small- to mid-size motorcycles are ideal. Riding in this area requires being prepared for the unexpected as the remoteness can find you in some unforgiving circumstances. MotoDiscovery provides support and experienced guidance allowing you to just enjoy the ride.

  1. AZBDR Section 2 reported as possibly closed on Sept 4th, reported by a Tucson local riding group (FB: Tucson Adventure Riders).

“Section 2 of the AZBDR POSSIBLY closed at the top due to recent fires. It also has not been properly maintained since. Extremely rocky.”

“We rode Mammoth to Winkelman and then Dripping Springs Rd. I was just getting used to navigating the technical rockies with my thumper for several miles and then had my spill going downhill. We rested and an owner of the 16,000 acres of BDR before the big mountain stopped by. He let us know that he maintains the road but hasn’t due to parts unavailable for his Caterpillar. Also that all the forest burned off at the top. And that the washed out trail only gets worse as you go up. He indicated that it is probably closed near the top. We turned around.”
