Big Updates Announced For 2024 KTM EXC-F Dual Sport Models

Sweeping upgrades coming to the chassis, bodywork, lighting, and more.

Published on 05.25.2023

KTM has announced an updated EXC-F range for the 2024 model year, sporting “95% new components,” according to the manufacturer. After incremental steps with chassis and engine development in the last few years, changes for the latest generation dual sport models include sweeping improvements to the chassis, bodywork, lighting and more.

First up, the frame has been revised. The 2024 EXC-F models are now equipped with an all-new hydro-formed, laser-cut, and robot-welded design. According to KTM, the now black-powder coated frame brings new longitudinal and torsional flex parameters for even greater rider feedback, energy absorption, and straight-line stability. The footrest mounts have also been moved inwards, slimming things down for less risk of getting hooked, plus the side stand is now a completely forged one-piece component.

Taking charge at the rear of the main frame is an all-new lightweight 2-piece subframe, constructed from a combination of polyamide and reinforced aluminum which is said to offer excellent handling and rider feedback. The new design is also shorter, more compact, and more robust than the previous generation with the ability to bend and flex in the event of a crash, rather than break. All electronic components, including an all-new Offroad Control Unit, are fully integrated into the subframe without any extra need for brackets, holders or unnecessary fixtures.

Upfront, the latest models now boast an all-new 48 mm WP XACT Closed Cartridge spring fork, featuring a new mid-valve piston concept that optimizes oil flow within the cartridge and offers consistent damping. New fork protection rings also provide improved protection against dirt intrusion. Out back, the PDS shock system has been updated with a new shock mount mated to a more-compact and lighter WP XPLOR PDS rear shock featuring new bearing seals and piston. The suspension at both ends is fully adjustable for compression and damping by way of hand clickers, without the need for any tools, plus KTM says preload adjustability on the rear can also be done on the fly.

An improved center of gravity was achieved by tilting the engine 2° backward and repositioning the front sprocket 3 mm lower, for improved handling and maneuverability. Together with the benefits of mass centralization and reduced weight, the anti-squat behavior of the chassis was significantly improved, enhancing traction on extreme inclines and powering out of corners in special enduro stages.

At the surface level, the new EXC-F range benefits from new bodywork all around. This has been developed with input from the FMF KTM Factory racers to deliver an improved rider triangle for better knee contact, especially when standing on the pegs. A new front fender design now also features mud-repelling fins for expelling dirt and mud from hitting the rider or radiators, while a new transparent, polythene (XPE) fuel tank (2.24-gallon/8.5-liter 4-stroke and 2.37-gallon/9-liter 2-stroke) provides easy fuel level monitoring and completes the bodywork package.

Monitoring the electronics comes courtesy of a totally independent Offroad Control Unit under the seat, which replaces the use of electronic fuses and relays. In the event of any electrical component failure, the outputs are deactivated individually, with the error status of each unit indicated by a red or green LED light. This makes for quick and easy troubleshooting on the trail.

Lighting the way forward, the 2024 range features a completely new LED headlight unit and light mask. The mask itself features improved triple clamp protection against roost and does away with the rubber mounting straps for improved fitment. Even better, the LED lighting unit is 300% brighter, says KTM.

Availability

Out of the four different engine capacity models KTM is making available for the 2024 EXC-F 4-stroke range (250, 350, 450, 500), the US is only getting the 350 EXC-F and 500 EXC-F. No pricing has been listed yet but KTM has announced the arrival of the new models at dealerships in August.

“KTM says preload adjustability on the rear can also be done on the fly.”

I read that, and then look at the detailed picture of the rear shock. How is that manual preload nut “done on the fly”?? Marketing BS?

I’m cautiously optimistic that corporate KTM warranty behavior will improve, now that there is a new corporate building in NA. However, the fluff piece about the building shown during the Pro Motocross opening run at Pala CA, did not show any corporate offices (like warranty claims approval). It was all about the racing garage taking up what looked like the entire lower floor. OK, yeah it was race day, sure. But my optimism remains cautious about Corporate KTM Warranty.

If you’re willing to buy china made product, then KTM better watch their 6 for Kove Moto.
