Alpinestars Launches New Tech-Air 5 Plasma Airbag System
Engineered for both on and off-road while being the brand’s lightest airbag to date.
Alpinestars has added a new member to the Tech-Air family with the release of the Tech-Air 5 Plasma. The fresh offering stands out in the company’s airbag lineup as a versatile solution for different riding styles, while also being the lightest Tech-Air system to date.

Weighing just 1,530g (3.3 pounds), the Tech-Air 5 Plasma is over 25% lighter than the original Tech-Air 5. Designed with a slim, minimalist profile, Alpinestars says the system fits seamlessly under any protective motorcycle jacket for maximum comfort and unrestricted movement. It also operates with an all-new single canister, resulting in a low overall weight and a faster inflation time, while simultaneously being easier and faster to service.
With versatility in mind, the Tech-Air 5 Plasma features a new, advanced algorithm with three dedicated Riding Modes:
- Street: optimized for asphalt roads including situations in which the rider’s motorcycle is hit by another while stopped.
- Race: designed for any type of closed course (asphalt) track use.
- Offroad: allows adventure riders to push the envelope and capabilities of performance off-road.

Riders can easily switch between Riding Modes, even while wearing gloves, by pressing the integrated LED Display Button. Its more compact electronic system includes 6 sensors (2 tri-axial sensors, 1 tri-axial accelerometer, and 1 tri-axial gyroscope located on the main electronic control unit).
The new airbag system is a category II certified PPE (personal protective equipment), offering full upper-body coverage, safeguarding the chest, ribs, back, and shoulders. An integrated back protector constructed with Nucleon Plasma technology offers optimal impact-absorption, while providing flexibility, breathability, and ventilation.

Activation of the system is simple. Just zip up the vest and close the magnetic flap. The LED Display will visually indicate the active status complemented by a haptic vibration alert to notify the rider that the system is armed. According to Alpinestars, the Tech-Air 5 Plasma’s user-friendly design also enables quick airbag removal for vest cleaning, and provides effortless reassembly of the system.

The Tech-Air 5 Plasma includes a certified lithium-ion battery that provides 30 hours of riding time. A conveniently placed USB-C charging port on the LED Display allows for easy recharging. It also features Bluetooth connectivity and an accompanying Tech-Air App, allowing riders to use their phone to easily:

- Monitor System status, and battery life.
- Record rides and map routes via the MyRide feature.
- Consult the User Manual.
- Update System software when new software releases become available.
The new airbag system is currently available in the US in sizes XS to 4XL with an MSRP of $789.95. Alpinestars says international availability will begin October 2025. For more information go to alpinestars.com.
