Honda Recalls Certain Africa Twin Motorcycles For Engine Stall Issue
Software error in wheelie control feature has led to a recall of 4,205 motorcycles.
American Honda Motor Co. has issued a recall on certain CRF1100 Africa Twin motorcycles due to a problem with the fuel injection electronic control unit (FI-ECU). A total of 4,205 units from model years 2022, 2024 and 2025 are affected by the recall issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
According to the defect report, the FI-ECU was incorrectly programmed in affected models, which can cause the traction control settings to be miscalculated when the Wheelie Control feature is enabled during certain riding conditions. This software error while the motorcycle is in use, can result in loss of power or an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
Honda says the problem originated during development of the Wheelie Control feature. An investigation into the issue found that the software program was carried over from a different model motorcycle and not thoroughly reviewed and validated for the CRF1100 Africa Twin model. Honda states riders should be wary of warning signs such as abnormal acceleration when the Wheelie Control feature is enabled.
According to the report, Honda first noticed the Wheelie Control feature was not functioning properly back in May 2023 and began to investigate. To correct the issue, the manufacturer began a Product Update campaign (KP7) for certain 2022 model year Africa Twin motorcycles to update the FI-ECU software. It was subsequently found that the problem persisted after the update and that a defect related to motor vehicle safety existed, triggering the current recall. This time around, the manufacturer says the new remedy software settings for the Wheelie Control feature have been improved from the initial Product Update version.
Models Affected:
MAKE | MODEL | YEAR |

How To Get It Fixed
Registered owners of all affected motorcycles, including those who previously had the Product Update campaign completed, will be contacted by mail and asked to take their motorcycle to an authorized Honda Powersports dealer. The dealer will reprogram the FI-ECU with improved software settings for the Wheelie Control feature free of charge.
Honda says that those who have paid to have these repairs completed at their own expense may be eligible for reimbursement. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed January 20, 2025 but you may contact the manufacturer’s customer service at 1-866-784-1870 and refer to Honda’s number for this recall: KR1.
Owners may also contact the NHTSA Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to nhtsa.gov and refer to the recall number 24V-882.
