KLIM Releases New Smart Airbag Vest with Adventure Mode

A new motorcycle airbag system created to improve protection for adventure riders.

Published on 09.28.2022

KLIM and French airbag company In&motion have teamed up to release a new adventure-oriented airbag vest called the Ai-1 Rally. Born from tests at the grueling Dakar Rally, the new algorithm-driven vest is a more protective version of KLIM’s original Ai-1 Airbag Vest.

An additional Adventure Mode is now also available from In&motion to operate the new Ai-1 Rally Airbag Vest and original version on unpaved terrain. Using data collected by professional rally racing riders, the adventure-specific riding mode is tuned for off-road vibrations and provides more leniency toward situations of limited grip not causing the need for inflation. The AI-powered algorithms for Adventure mode also factor potential loss of balance at low speeds and slight jumps.

The Ai-1 is powered by Artificial Intelligence and real-world crash data that gets smarter over time.

With multiple detection modes, riders are able to optimize their protection by activating the correct detection mode for each riding situation. The lightweight, electronic vest is fully wireless and autonomous, meaning there are no sensors needed on the bike. An inert-gas canister provides the pressure needed to inflate the vest in under 60 milliseconds, and it can easily be replaced by the user. In&motion’s In&box DPP (Detect-Protect-Perfect) sensor platform offers high crash sensitivity through continuous algorithm updates for added protection.

In just 60 milliseconds the airbag system detects an accident and deploys protection to your Thorax, Abdomen, Neck and Spine.
  • Street Mode: Detection mode tuned for day-to-day riding.
  • Adventure Mode: Algorithm for rough terrain with appropriately tuned crash detection.
  • Track Mode: Special algorithms for use on a closed circuit provide professional-grade protection. Not currently available in the US.

Powered by Artificial Intelligence, the In&motion system was tested in 2021 by elite Dakar Rally professionals, including Toby Price, Matthias Walkner, Sam Sunderland, Laia Sanz and David Knight. These systems use “smart” technology to update and perfect the crash detection algorithms through data automatically collected from users. Since May 2017, more than 50 million global miles have been analyzed in all conditions to continually evolve the AI crash detection algorithms powering the vest. The system is also FIM Rally-Raid approved.

Designed to protect the thorax, abdomen, spine and neck, KLIM states that the Ai-1 Rally Airbag Vest is the only 5-Star SRA-Certified smart airbag, Europe’s top safety rating available, with detection plus inflation time under 60 milliseconds. The main vest body fabric is moisture wicking and breathable for comfort underneath a motorcycle jacket. The upgraded D3O chest and back pads create an added layer of protection for low-speed tumbles, while the D3O CE Level 2-rated vented backpad is certified for ambient and wet conditions. The D3O CE Level 1-rated chest pads are inboard of the air bladder, between the rider and air bladder and offer impact absorption even without inflation.

Adventure mode is tuned for off-road vibrations and provides more leniency toward situations of limited grip. The AI-powered algorithms also factor potential loss of balance at low speeds (e.g. tipovers) and slight jumps.

The Ai-1 Rally Airbag Vest retails for $469.99. To activate the In&box Mission Control Module, KLIM offers two options: A $120/year subscription ($12 for month-to-month) or a one-time payment of $399. The Adventure Mode is available as a subscription-enhanced option for $25/year or $8/month.

KLIM explains that if you have opted for the subscription/lease option and miss a payment “you will have a 30-day grace period during which the airbag functions completely the same. You will also receive notifications about the missed payment.”  For more information go to klim.com

I’ll have to pass on any safety gear I need a subscription for. I could just see the computer trying to figure out if your subscription is up-to-date on the way down. 60 Milliseconds except in low wifi areas.

That’s not how it works lol. You’ll have a 1 month grace period if you miss your payment and if you still don’t pay after that the system alerts you before you use it that it has been disabled. If you don’t like subscriptions just buy the system instead.
