Top 7 Areas to Ride Adventure Motorcycles in South Africa

The unique landscape, wildlife and culture make this land an ADV paradise.

5. North West Frontier

Thunderstorms can transform a tame trail into a treacherous track within minutes of the first drop.

A heady mixture of sand and bush makes this area bordering Botswana one of the most challenging and rewarding adventure riding destinations in South Africa.

Distances are vast, almost as infinite as the sunsets, in the northern reaches of the North West province. This is Big Five country where a rider has to keep a look-out for large antelope, especially kudu that jump game fences with dismissive disdain.

The range of road surfaces also accommodates adventure sidecars.

Searing heat broken by heavy downpours make this a region better explored in any season other than summer.

Hi Derek
I have just read your article. In one week I will fly from Germany to SA and start a long trip by motorbike to the North of Africa. I would like to ride your suggested trips, if possible in winter time.
Do you have any detailed description or gpx tracks?
Thanks for your help,
wishes
Frank

We are planning to tour Europe for the whole month of June 2020 every year on a GS and then store it untill the next year.

We need assistance in finding a good condition 2016-2017

Hi Bruce
You’re so right! Problem is there are so many places to ride, and sometimes not enough space to tell the story. Which are your favorite rides?
