Each year we visit the Progressive International Motorcycle Show (IMS) in Long Beach, California to see what’s new and interesting for Adventure Riders. Long Beach IMS 2014 took place over the weekend of November 14th at the Convention Center. We arrived the day before the show started, on Press Day, with a chance to check out all of the recently released Adventure Touring motorcycles before the crowds. We returned on the weekend to a full house packed with motorcyclists of all types. With some of the most exciting motorcycle and product releases coming from the Adventure Touring segment, all signs indicate continued growth for the industry.
The Bikes
All of the top Adventure Bike manufacturers were present at the Long Beach IMS, including BMW, Yamaha, KTM, Honda, Suzuki, Ducati and Kawasaki. A new addition to the Adventure Bike brands this year was CSC Motorcycles with their 250cc Cyclone RX-3.
BMW’s stunningly beautiful S100XR Supersport Adventure Bike weighs 502 lbs. wet and generates 160hp.
The 2015 Kawasaki KLR650 now incorporates updates from the 2014.5 “New Edition” model, including a tapered seat and firmer suspension.
The pricing on the new 250cc CSC Cyclone RX-3 continues to rise. Order one soon to lock in the best pricing.
The Suzuki V-Strom 650 XT ABS was there showing off its new beak design and wire spoked wheels for 2015.
The redesigned Versys 1000 has been available in Europe for years but is new to the U.S. market for 2015.
The Kawasaki Versys 650 so closely resembles the Versys 1000, that it was hard to tell the two models apart.
Honda did not show their Africa Twin prototype revealed at EICMA, only this CB500X unchanged for 2015.
The new Ducati Multistrada looks fierce and ready to fight with BMW for the claim to fastest Adventure Bike.
The Triumph Tiger 800’s updates for 2015 could be just what it needs to move ahead of BMW in the middle-weight ADV category.
The KTM 1290 Super Adventure felt only slightly larger than the 1190 Adventure and less wide in the tank than the BMW GS Adventure.
While not technically an Adventure Bike, the new Yamaha FJ-09 is ADV styled and we expect some folks will try to ride it off-road.

Rob Dabney started a lifelong obsession with motorcycles at the age of 15 when he purchased his first bike – a 1982 Honda MB5. Through his 20’s and 30’s he competed in off-road desert races, including the Baja 250, 500 and 1000. Eventually, his proclivity for exploration led him to dual sport and adventure riding. Rob’s never-ending quest to discover what’s around the next bend has taken him on Adventures in Latin America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and throughout the American West. As a moto journalist, he enjoys inspiring others to seek adventure across horizons both near and far.

Thanks Paul. The information on the KLR was provided to us by a Kawasaki rep at the IMS show. We’ve now confirmed with the Senior PR Coordinator that the New Edition changes have in fact been incorporated into the standard 2015 KLR650.
