Spy Shots Reveal New Dirt-Focused BMW M 1300 GS On The Way
Flagship GS spotted with major changes as M‑series ADV model moves forward.
BMW’s “M” badge has long signaled top‑tier performance in the automotive world, and in recent years it has made a decisive move into BMW Motorrad’s lineup with the M 1000 RR, M 1000 R, and M 1000 XR. BMW trademark filings back in 2022 suggested that a higher-spec ‘M’ version of the R 1300 GS may be on the way. Now, it appears the brand is finally ready to expand the M family with the introduction of a new flagship adventure motorcycle.
Although BMW has never officially confirmed an M 1300 GS, new sightings around the company’s development facilities strongly suggest the model is entering the final stretch of testing. A covered prototype — transported under a tarp for secrecy — has been photographed by moto-paparazzo Bernhard M. Höhne, indicating the bike is already in an advanced stage of development. Early prototypes typically lack cosmetic details like labeling, but the overall form points to a machine nearing production readiness.

Unlike the previous R 1250 GS HP variant, which was largely a cosmetic package, the upcoming M 1300 GS appears to be a significant redesign aimed at off‑road performance. The most notable change is a shift to 21‑inch front and 18‑inch rear spoke wheels, similar to the air/oil‑cooled R 12 G/S, signaling BMW’s intent to position the M model as an even more dirt‑capable GS. The prototype was fitted with Metzeler Karoo tires, and additional visible updates include what appears to be longer suspension travel, a reinforced and revised final‑drive swingarm support, and high‑performance M‑brakes with the signature blue finish. Unlike the R 1300 GS Adventure, the M model is likely to use the smaller R 1300 GS fuel tank to save weight and improve mass distribution.
The 1300cc water‑cooled boxer engine appears largely unchanged from the R 1300 GS. Its already stout 110 ft-lbs of torque @ 6,500 RPM should remain more than adequate. Engineers might squeeze out a few more horsepower beyond the R 1300 GS’s 145 hp @ 7,750 RPM, but this wouldn’t really be necessary, especially since the M 1300 GS is expected to shed weight through body changes and premium materials such as titanium, likely used in the exhaust system.
Styling changes remain speculative, but a revised seat is being rumored, and a reworked rear frame is expected. The removal of front and rear radar units also wouldn’t be surprising, as it would reduce weight and align with the M model’s more off road-driven mission.

Overall, BMW appears to be aiming the M 1300 GS as the most aggressive off-road variant of the GS lineup — less travel‑enduro, more high‑performance machine capable of tackling any terrain. As with BMW’s other M‑series motorcycles, the M 1300 GS is expected to sit at the top of the boxer range in both capability and price. For context, the M 1000 XR and M 1000 R run about $8,000-$12,000 more than their next‑closest variants, suggesting the M 1300 GS may follow a similar pricing gap.
Before the M model arrives, BMW is reportedly preparing a mild update to the R 1300 GS, possibly as early as early fall. The updated GS with standard cast wheels was also spotted alongside the M prototype and serves as a useful comparison point for the changes underway. While BMW has not announced a launch date, European publications report that a release before the 2027 riding season is likely.
