Yamaha Reveals A Tenere 400 Concept Ahead Of EICMA

A smaller, lighter, 400cc single Tenere is in the works but may take awhile to get here.

Yamaha pulled the wraps off a new Tenere 400 concept adventure bike today during a world premiere event ahead of EICMA, offering the first official look at what could eventually become the company’s entry into the growing lightweight ADV category.

The motorcycle remains firmly in the concept stage, however, with Yamaha releasing no technical details and concealing portions of the machine from public view. Even so, the prototype provides some important clues about the direction of a future production model.

At the heart of the bike appears to be a single-cylinder engine featuring electronic fuel injection. The powerplant is housed in a steel tube frame and paired with a chassis that looks purpose-built for off-road travel. A 21-inch front wheel and 18-inch rear wheel signal real dirt intentions, while the KYB suspension appears to offer somewhere in the neighborhood of 7.5 to 8 inches of travel.

The rest of the package follows a Rally-style theme. A high front fender, substantial skid plate coverage, full-wrap hand guards, oversized 1-1/8-inch handlebars and a flat one-piece seat. Yamaha also equipped the concept with rally-inspired bodywork, including a tall windscreen and a large vertically oriented navigation display that looks like a rally roadbook tablet.

Only one exhaust outlet exiting the cylinder indicates this will be a single cylinder powerplant.

Several finishing touches hint at adventure-touring ambitions as well. The concept wears an Akrapovič exhaust fitted with a carbon-fiber heat shield, though the premium system will likely end up as optional equipment should the motorcycle reach production. Rubber inserts fitted to the footpegs suggest Yamaha is also considering on-road comfort alongside off-road capability, although the wheels are tubeless-style spoked rims.

An unfinished plastic headlight mask with simuleted LED bulbs signals the T4 concept is still in the design phase.

While the overall design looks promising, several details indicate the Tenere 400 may not be arriving at dealer showroom floors anytime soon. Notably, the bike displayed in Milan lacked a functional headlight assembly. In its place was a molded plastic panel featuring four simulated LED elements designed to resemble the lighting signature of the current Tenere 700. Yamaha representatives also prevented journalists from photographing the top portion of the motorcycle, an unusual restriction that further suggests key components may still be under development. In addition, the rear wheel was partially obscured by the faux landscape and brush.

Taken together, those details paint the picture of a prototype rather than a near-production machine.  But that doesn’t mean the project is any less significant. Demand for smaller, lighter adventure bikes has never been more on the rise, with manufacturers increasingly targeting riders who want genuine off-road capability with less weight, complexity, and cost than larger ADV machines. Based on what Yamaha has shown so far, the Tenere 400 appears aimed directly at that audience.

The good news for adventure riders is that the project is now in public view and we’ll no doubt be able to monitor its development through various spy shots in coming months. If the final product retains the concept’s off-road-focused chassis, rally styling, and lightweight single-cylinder platform, it may prove to be well worth the wait.

Single cylinder is a good sign. There’s already too many road-focused twins in this space and Yamaha could have easily put their 321cc MT-03 motor in this and called it a day, but a thumper means they’re giving serious thought to weight. 155kg or less and I sell my 390 Adventure for this.

This would be a great addition to the segment! Hopefully it will be priced more appropriately than the suzuki 400. A wr250r but 400 would sell like hotcakes.
