Husqvarna To Add Norden 501, 401 & 250 To Its Adventure Line Up

Official report confirms several new Husky adventure bike models coming.

Published on 12.24.2019
For the last few years Husqvarna has been regaining strength in the off-road and motocross segments, while sparking new passions with its street bike platform. More recently, the company publicly confirmed production of its first adventure bike, the Norden 901, and now investor documents reveal it will also be building a range of smaller displacement adventure bikes. Seems like Husqvarna is going all in with the Norden!

The documents, presented by Pierer Mobility Group (KTM and Husqvarna’s parent company), list a 501 adventure bike that will likely share KTM’s new 490 parallel-twin engine, not the thumper motor currently found in the Husqvarna FE 501 Enduro. It is also believed this new line of mid-range Husqvarna adventure bikes will carry the name ‘Norden’ like the 901.

In addition to the Norden 501, there will be a 401cc adventure model expected to share the same ambition and single-cylinder engine we know is coming in the budget-minded KTM 390 Adventure, though we wonder if Husqvarna won’t spin a more stylized version that aligns it with the distinct, edgy look of its first-ever road bikes, the Svartpilen and Vitpilen.

Norden 501, 401 and 250 are in the works
A Pierer Mobility Group investor presentation reveals plans for 501, 401 and 250cc adventure bikes to join the already confirmed Norden 901 in the lineup.

Because we know the 390 Adventure will be lighter weight (348 pounds), budget-minded ($6,199 USD) and feature a steel trellis frame, as well as a WP suspension that will allow about 7-inches of travel for off-road play, we expect similar characteristics on the Husqvarna Norden 401. These cost-focused specs also almost guarantee the twin-powered Norden 501 will have a more up-spec build and be even more adventure worthy.

According to the investor report, Husqvarna will also produce a 250 adventure bike, without a doubt another single, and probably a bike pointed more at KTM’s campaign to infiltrate the lucrative high-volume Asian market.

For any Rip Van Winkles out there, Pierer Mobility Group-owned KTM liberated the storied Swedish brand Husqvarna in 2013 as it languished in BMW’s portfolio, and promptly transfused it with enough cash and proven hardware that it was soon breathing on its own again.

For those adventurers who prefer bigger power and longer rides, the most interesting thing to come from the famous Swedish-born brand is sure to be the Norden 901. The concept bike looks strong and well-equipped, and the sources at Husky have assured us it will also be light in weight – a long-overdue asset among halo models and key factor to enticing buyers. Another intriguing Husqvarna is listed as a “Classic” model in the report, targeted toward entry-level riders. Shown only as a blurred image, what we can tell is that it’s a Scrambler-style bike that looks a bit like Royal Enfield’s Himalayan. We’ll have to keep an eye out for more details on this one.

Husqvarna scrambler is being built
Visually, all we have to go by is this obscured image of a new Scrambler model, which has a striking resemblance to the Royal Enfield Himalayan.

In the words of Facebook follower Kevin Sgro after commenting on yesterday’s KTM 490 Adventure news, “What a time to be alive.” So, Merry Christmas eve everyone! Pierer Mobility Group (a.k.a. 2019’s Santa) has one more new adventure model up its sleeve, this one true wild card we’ll unwrap for you tomorrow.

IF….they would put good adjustable suspension and the 690 motor in that frame, I (and a LOT of others) would buy it immediately.
I’ll wait and see about this bike though.

a mini 790, oh yah,,,I’ll take 2. this 501 would be my dream adventure bike.
I love when the asian bike companies continually leave the door open for the european bikes to take over. If you fail to build someone else will. Bring on the real adventure bikes not the big 1000cc touring bikes. oh yah

Same P.R. nonsense they pulled a few years ago when the secret “390ADV” was rumored…..and look what came out of that, a +400lbs cast wheeled behemoth with an underpowered motor. It’s not that they won’t do it……it’s that expectation and reality haven’t proven from the past, to be equal…..and until that happens I won’t be holding my breathe.

Dunno about all that negative nelly talk
I’ll be replacing my DR 650 with a 390ADV and put bag on it and ride the crap out of it
I’m 53 and have ridden for a while and I love the options coming our way right now and I plan on running out the km on the warranty on the 390 and look at the 501/490 at that point

I welcome the modern feature set in particular with these bikes and the price pint is insane here in Canada

Finally we are entering the era of ADV options

I say bring it on,including the overseas build, I’m not seeing KTM wanting to fail at the moment, they are hungry for market share and more power to them

I like the fact KTM now focusing on regular person bikes

I mean I’m kinda disappointed in the cast wheel choice too (which will easily be solved with accessories/aftermarket) but… +400lbs? KTM published a dry weight of 348lbs and Cycle News tested a fully fueled prototype at under 380. And underpowered compared to what? BMW’s 310 puts out 10hp less and weighs the same. It’s a 373cc single, exactly how much power were you expecting?

Off-road only race bike power with 5,000 mile oil change and 20,000 mile services.

Surprised he didn’t complain about the price being too high, used KLR and DRZ are much cheaper!

Ya this is exactly it….finally the bike manufacturers are listening and making mid/small adventure bikes people wanna complain.

I have owned most of the Japanese bikes in the dual sport arena and they are fine for what hey were….but they are dated (except the WRR which I loved to ride)

I don’t wanna “ farkle” a bike again.
It’s actually really expensive to darkly in Canada at least compared to the states.

Just wanna get ergos correct, the 390ADV I will look at the bigger wind screen if I need it but planning on riding the hell out of it stock.

What’s to complain about?

My price is $8300 all in Canadian with a two year or 38,000 km warranty

I wanna run out the Kms on that warranty and then look at the twins 501/490.

What a great time to be alive

Wow, maybe I’ll have to cross the border to buy my copy! $8300 including warranty (and I’m assuming tax?) is still than the US MSRP of $6200. Wonder what the discrepancy is about.

They gave us a break on the dollar exchange for once,
So 6800 cad vs 6200 usd for base price
After dealer costs to ma at 8350
Can’t say no at that price

DRZs are great, I kept mine, but it doesn’t put the big grin on my face like the 790R.

I saw the Norden 501 and thought wow if that’s a single cylinder like the 690 / 500 exc that’d be perfect and have to consider trading the 790 for one. Straight out the showroom, light with good fuel range and factory rally style fairing. Maybe if the 701 long range sells well they’ll actually provide some rally fairing as an option eventually given alot of people bolt them on. A small capacity parallel twin doesn’t interest me but I’m sure they’ll sell a bunch of them for markets with smaller capacity bikes / low cc learner laws.

A 500cc twin? I’m sold! Hopefully it’s going to sell well and will set a trend (please Honda, put that CB500 engine in your CRF250 Rally).

The Japanese are slow to pivot..

Big Red ought to have had a 500/800 ADV by now. Hopefully, they will realize this soon enough.

I have a KTM 390 Adventure that I love. But I’ll definitely jump on a Norden 501 if it’s more off road capable. It would be a Goldilocks size.
