BMW Issues ‘Stop Sale’ On Nearly All Motorcycles In North America
All but one of the German manufacturer's two-wheeled models are affected.

Not so good news for those looking to buy a BMW motorcycle from a North American dealer right now. Just days away from the unveiling of the next-gen R1300GS, the German manufacturer has ordered a ‘stop sale’ on all new and used gas-powered bikes in dealer inventory. As it stands, the only model not affected in the US and Canada is the CE 04 ― BMW’s electric scooter.
In their official statement, BMW says the reason for the sales shutdown is not safety related and is instead due to an issue with the materials used in the evaporative system (EVAP) of their motorcycles. This system is designed to help capture fuel vapors and recycle them back into the engine intake, preventing them from escaping into the atmosphere.

Details are vague but the fact that it is not a safety issue seems to indicate that BMW has found a problem with their emissions compliance that potentially affects several bike generations. How far back the issue is traced to remains unclear.
The ‘stop sale’ is temporary but BMW is yet to disclose a timeline of when sales will be resumed. BMW also explained that the directive is voluntary, meaning it was initiated by them rather than a governing agency. Regardless, dealers are required to comply with the order.
Below is the official statement from BMW:
“BMW of North America is dedicated to providing vehicles to our customers that meet their expectations. To ensure that our vehicles are of the highest industry standards, BMW performs ongoing testing and evaluation.
Following a recent quality analysis, BMW is pursuing measures to further evaluate the material used in a component of its motorcycle evaporative system, which may not have been produced to material specifications.
As a result, BMW of North America is issuing a temporary, voluntary stop sale for all new and pre-owned BMW motorcycle models in dealer inventory, except for the CE 04.
This temporary stop sale is not safety related and BMW owners may continue to ride their motorcycles as normal.”

My nearest BMW dealer also sells Triumph bikes. As much as I am looking forward to seeing the F900GS, right now might be a great time to buy a Triumph…
“Details are vague” … Details cannot be vague, that’s why they’re details, BMW is being vague by not providing the details. I’m going to start a rumor .. The ratchetating flammergeist seal is leaking past the richstunglers causing fartfegnugen releases.
It’s not the ratchetating flammergeist seal, it’s the boomgaztienenszoomiegofooster sensor. When that malfunctions the fartfengnugen gases build up a you get vapor lock in the emitzienenbangerfitzen system. A common diagnostic mistake with Teutonic systems. I believe the ethnic term for this is, “Oopsenwefookedoop”.
I was supposed to have taken delivery of a new R1250GSA last week and have been in daily contact with the dealer. Dealers have been left in the dark by BMW Motorrad for a week now – and this is as egregious as the Stop Sales order itself. Someone in senior leadership at BMW Mottorrad NA really should be terminated over this debacle. The whole issue has been managed terribly – with no consideration of customers or the dealer network.
9 days after the Stop Sales order and BMW Motorrad has still not communicated a thing to their dealer network – to say nothing of their customers. Nothing. Crickets. Just brutal.
