Garmin’s New Plug-n-Play System Brings Radar Tech To Your Bike
A new way to add rearview and blind spot monitoring to your motorcycle.
Motorcycle manufacturers are increasingly incorporating radar systems into their most advanced flagship models to enhance rider safety and now Garmin wants to bring this technology to any motorcycle via a plug-n-play kit.
Called the Zumo R1 Radar, the new purpose-built system was introduced at CES 2025 and provides riders with rearview and blind spot monitoring. And although the Zumo R1 doesn’t have all the advanced capabilities you’ll find in integrated OEM radar systems like those of KTM or Ducati, it does seem to be more robust and versatile than the aftermarket option by Innovv.
The device features two side-facing amber lights and an optional rear-facing red light that can help maximize visibility to nearby vehicles, while indicator lights on the handlebars provide riders with awareness of approaching vehicles.

The zūmo R1 Radar can also be integrated with handlebar-mounted indicators and paired with your smartphone or zūmo XT2 navigator (sold separately) for a detailed radar display plus you can also get audio alerts through compatible helmets or headsets. This versatility allows riders to customize detection settings and receive notifications about nearby vehicles.

- Radar display: See a full-screen radar display of in-range vehicles when connected to the zūmo Radar mobile app or a zūmo XT2 motorcycle navigator.
- Audio alerts: Hear notifications when other vehicles are approaching, when paired with a rider’s compatible helmet or headset via the zūmo Radar smartphone app.
- Toggle settings: Adjust light and alert settings through the zūmo Radar app. Riders can decide how near or far away they want their indicator lights to notify them of approaching vehicles in their blind spot.

“We’re excited to bring innovative radar technology to our motorcycle customers with the zūmo R1 Radar. As all riders know, situational awareness is paramount when sharing the road. Information about the location of approaching vehicles, especially those that may be in your blind spot, can allow you to ride with more confidence and the high-visibility external lights can help other drivers be more aware of you as well.” –Dan Bartel, Garmin Vice President of Global Consumer Sales Ride.

Featuring black powder-coated hardware with an IP67 dust and water rating, the zūmo R1 Radar is constructed to withstand harsh environments. Garmin also says riders can expect a clean installation on virtually any motorcycle – no batteries or charging required. The compact radar solution discreetly mounts above or below the license plate so riders can preserve the aesthetic of their motorcycle.
Available now, the Garmin zūmo R1 Radar has a suggested retail price of $599.99. See it on display during CES 2025 at the Garmin booth, #3540 in the LVCC West Hall.
