KTM 990 Adventure Spied In Near‑Production Form
Near-production test mule reveals dual tanks set up, new engine and more.
KTM introduced the first 990 Adventure a little more than 20 years ago. Powered by the LC8 V‑twin, it produced 106 hp from just under 1000 cc and became one of KTM’s defining adventure platforms of its era before the company shifted its big‑bike lineup toward the 1090 and 1190 Adventure, and later the 1290 and 1390 Super Adventure. But as long‑time readers know, KTM is now preparing to revive the 990 Adventure badge, positioned between the flagship 1390 Super Adventure and the 790 Adventure, which will reportedly go through a notable evolution.

Near‑production prototypes photographed in Upper Austria by motorcycle paparazzo Bernhard Höhne show that the 990 Adventure will share a close visual relationship with the upcoming 790, similar to how the current 790 and 890 models mirror each other. The front end is steep and rally‑inspired, but unlike KTM’s new 690 Rally with its tower‑style assembly, the 990 uses a tall, integrated front section with a compact LED projection lens as the main headlight.

Just behind the tall windscreen, the liter-class parallel twin distinguishes itself from the smaller model: the 990 Adventure uses a dual‑tank setup with two separate filler openings, extending down toward the rider’s feet, offering substantial volume and likely long range. Unlike the current 790 Adventure, where the tank volume is carried far downward, the 990 Adventure keeps its mass higher, resulting in a slimmer fairing profile. The wider fairing also accommodates a split radiator.

The adventure model borrows much of its architecture from the Duke, adapted for its intended use. In the naked bike, the engine produces 123 hp and displaces 947 cc. The Adventure will likely receive its own tuning, possibly sacrificing a few horsepower in favor of a stronger torque curve. As with the Duke, the header leads into a newly designed exhaust system compared to the 890 Adventure, with a larger collector and a slimmer, lower‑mounted silencer. As a result, the 990 Adventure also uses a banana‑shaped swingarm that curves around the collector. The rear subframe is new as well, transitioning from a steel tube structure into a cast aluminum section. This makes the rear of the 990 Adventure significantly slimmer and likely lighter.

Two different versions of the 990 Adventure were spotted during testing, distinguished by different front forks and windscreen heights. It’s possible these represent different equipment variants, similar to the S, X, and R versions in KTM’s other adventure models. All 990 Adventure versions should feature generous suspension travel, as KTM appears to be designing the bike for travel and all‑terrain capability. It’s unclear when KTM will officially present the model, but development is clearly in its final phase. According to reports, the 990 Adventure is expected to reach dealers for the 2027 season.

A new 990 Adventure right along with a new Triumph Tiger 900. One thing in common is the abandonment of the “beak”. The “beak” has been the common feature on so many of these bikes, it will be interesting to see if the other manufacturers follow suit.
