KTM Teases Big-Bore ADV Bike With Semi-Automatic Transmission
The Austrian brand debuts their new clutch-free prototype at Erzbergrodeo.
KTM has put a new large-capacity adventure bike prototype through the gauntlet at the grueling Erzbergrodeo off-road event. Raced by two-time world enduro champion Johnny Aubert, the thoroughly camouflaged bike has been dubbed the KTM AMT which stands for ‘Automatic Manual Transmission’.
Although details are still scarce, the teased dirt-oriented machine boasts an LC8 V-twin powerplant and it is believed to be the Austrian brand’s next-gen 1390 Super Adventure R model. Not surprising, since KTM’s Super Duke R already made the jump to 1350cc as a 2024 model.
In addition, the KTM AMT has been confirmed to offer an automatic or manual clutchless experience. Through a switch on the handlebars, riders can choose to ride in full automatic or manual mode, which allows for gear shifts through either bar-mounted up and down buttons or a foot-operated lever on the left-hand side.
Given Honda’s success with their DCT-equipped Africa Twin it’s no surprise KTM wants to join the party as well. In fact, historical data shows the demand for DCT technology remains strong. In 2023, DCT versions accounted for 49% of Africa Twin sales and more than 240,000 DCT-equipped Honda motorcycles have been sold across Europe since it was first introduced in 2009. BMW wants a piece of that pie too, with recent homologation filings revealing the upcoming R 1300 GS Adventure variant will offer a clutchless option.
Although wrapped in camouflage vinyl, teaser photos and video expose additional features like a large vertically-mounted TFT screen rather than landscape, high front fender, rally seat and a short smoked windscreen.
KTM has confirmed more details will be revealed in September. Stay tuned!

Maybe I am out of touch or too old school,
seems like automatic or Semi auto kinda takes
away the point of motorcycling. To me, it’s all about
your skill controlling all aspects of the bike,; lean, brakes,
upshifts, downshifts, throttle etc.
KTM needs to be careful with that “semi-automatic” language. California might institute a preemptory ban based on that alone.
Africa Twin owners are laughing at BMW & KTM peeps these days…… All the “ohhh DCT this and DCT that……..real motorcyclist”, blah, blah, blah!, Took 8 years and here we are……the big two touting “automatic” or “ semi automatic” clutches as the new big thing. I’ll quote Bruce Willis……. Welcome to the party, Pal!
The race results dubbed the bike as a 890R
I am already imagining a Husqvarna Norden 1401…
