Behind the Scenes of a Big-Budget KTM Promo Video

What goes into the making of a KTM adventure riding video? Watch and see.

Published on 11.25.2016

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be an expert test rider starring in a manufacturer’s big-budget promo video, then check out the behind the scenes footage of KTM’s epic 1090 Adventure R and 1290 Adventure R launch film. It turns out that capturing awesome power slides and monster wheelies on video, in an exotic location like Morocco, is actually a lot of work.

“Morocco 1090R/1290R Behind the Scenes” features Aussie Adam Riemann and Brit Paul Bolton hard on the throttle in the astonishing beauty of the north African country. Riemann is on a 2017 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R, while Bolton tails him on a 2017 KTM 1090 Adventure R. Both have the chops to make thrashing a big bike through tough desert terrain look easy, and fun.

Riemann is best known as the guy behind Motology Films, and he’s ridden and raced big adventure bikes all over the world. Bolton is a hard enduro star with races like the Erzberg Rodeo on his resume. Interestingly enough, this Morocco trip was the first time he’s ever ridden a big adventure bike.

It doesn’t take “Bolts” long to get the hang of it and after the bikes are sorted (and a flat tire fixed), they get down to business. Here’s where it all looks so glamorous. They fly down loose, sandy trails, hang a leg out flat-tracker style, thread their way through rock formations and wheelie up steep faces that wouldn’t be out of place in Moab.

But then comes the behind the scenes part as Riemann and the director hash out locations, shots and angles. Suddenly, you realize that a couple seconds of finished video might have taken hours to set up, shoot and reshoot. A beach scene that has the two sliding around on wet sand involved nearly 20 miles (30 kilometers) of slogging through boggy beach; a few seconds of bouncing through a field meant trip after trip through and around cactus bushes and a punctured radiator hose; navigating a rocky canyon meant holding dangerously high speeds.

The five days of filming resulted in just under four minutes of off-road eye candy, proving that starring in a promo video of this sort is good work if you can get it.
