How Good is the Ural Gear-Up With 2WD Off-Road?

See how the battle tested Ural performs off-road in the dirt, mud and snow.

Published on 04.18.2014

Ural built its reputation over decades of being used on the worst roads of the former USSR. The Ural Gear-Up is the 2WD model that is able to lock the rear wheel and sidecar wheel together on-demand for incredible traction off-road. But can a vehicle that was designed in 1939 really perform impressively off-road compared to modern standards?

We spent some time pulling together the best Ural off-road driving videos we could find online to see how good a Ural Gear-Up 2WD really is. The compilation video shows how it performs in the mud, snow, hill climbs and water crossings so you can see for yourself its full range of capabilities.

While the Ural Gear-Up may not be the fastest off-road vehicle, it can definitely handle some rugged terrain. You also get the stability of 3-wheels in low-traction conditions (kind of like a quad but much cooler), which can be important if you are getting up in age and picking up a heavy Adventure Bike is looking less appealing.

A Ural may not be as agile off-road as a standard Adventure Motorcycle, but it does look like a lot of fun.  And hey, even your passenger can take a nap while you ride. If you bring your dog, he can get all the fresh air he needs without getting a stiff neck sticking his head out of your car window. For $14,099 USD there are many nice motorcycles you could buy, but none would be as unique or stand out from the crowd as much as a Ural.
