Black Dog Launches Line Of Protection Parts For The BMW R1250GSA

Fresh new products to make your GSA tough as nails.

Published on 04.06.2022

Known around the world for its super rugged made-in-the-USA skid plates, Black Dog Cycle Works (BDCW), owned by adventure riding enthusiasts Kurt and Martha Forget, is constantly adding new products to its line of ADV bike “armor” and accessories. Today, we look at a new range of products designed specifically to safeguard the vulnerable cylinders and valve covers of BMW’s top-of-the-line R1250GSA

Crash Bar Reinforcement System

Anyone who rides off-road knows investing in crash protection for your expensive adventure bike is cheap insurance. Most start with an engine crash bar set, usually a product offered by the bike’s manufacturer. And that’s great, though not foolproof, especially when we’re talking about BMW’s flagship GSA and those protruding cylinder heads. Enter BDCW with its Crash Bar Reinforcement System, a set of custom machined, triangulated steel struts that attach to the frame using the engine through-bolt to optimize stability. The bars act as a brace to hold the OE crash bar system accountable, even during severe impacts. The crash bar reinforcement system sells for $259 and works for both the R1250GSA and earlier R1200GSA models.

Cylinder Head Guards

For the ultimate in cylinder head protection for the R1250GSA, BDCW has created literal shields for the bike’s super vulnerable magnesium head covers. Because nary an experienced GS pilot exists who hasn’t scratched, cracked or witnessed a damaged valve cover resulting from an off-road spill. All it takes is one pointy rock to hit between the crash bars and you’re reaching for the JB weld. Black Dog gives you the option to completely shield those exposed covers behind 1/4-inch 5052 Aluminum plates. Machined slots accommodate countersunk bolts which are attached to the stock crash bars for smooth, slidable finish. Available in “Silver Vein “or “Black Hammertone,” these new Cylinder Guards, which are only compatible with 2019 and newer GSA models, are being sold in pairs for an introductory price of $159.

Radiator Guards

There can be no doubt that radiator protection is essential for serious off-road adventuring, yet it’s the bike armor that’s most often overlooked, partly because of the trade off in cooling air circulation. While Black Dog has been making radiator guards for some time, this new design was created to maximize air flow without skimping on protection. The two aluminum plates feature “louvers” with each slat bent forward to deflect rocks and debris back down toward the ground. Black Dog says these guards are easy to install and don’t require removal of the radiator’s existing plastic shroud. Powered coated in a black finish, a pair of BDCW Radiator Guards for your current model R1250GSA goes for $159.

R1250GSA Ultimate Protection Package

If you’re looking to fully kit your R1250GSA in Black Dog protective armor, there’s the Ultimate Protection Package to consider. This kit includes the Crash Bar Reinforcement, a pair of Cylinder Guards in black or gray finish, two Radiator Guards and also the Ultimate Skid Plate that set the standard for Adventure Bike sump protection. The bundle is currently being offered for $920, which will save you 10% ($120).
