BMW Gives Intelligent Emergency Calling To R1250GSA In The US
The flagship GS and other models get a new smart safety system in North America.
It’s that time of year when BMW starts announcing all returning models for 2024, along with any changes and updates. Besides pricing, new paint jobs and packages, there is one significant update BMW is introducing to North America for several machines — Intelligent Emergency Call.
The new eCall safety system uses BMW Motorrad Connected Services which can be activated when the bike is delivered to the customer. New 2024 machines equipped with the feature include a covered SOS button, loudspeaker and microphone on the right-side handlebar controls. When pressed, the SOS button connects the rider to an agent who can be advised verbally of the general situation (injuries, number ofr riders, etc.) and who can contact emergency services, if required.
However, the eCall feature can also automatically contact the BMW call center if a crash is detected and the SOS button is not pushed. The system tries to establish initial contact with the victim and activates the chain of rescue as quickly as possible. The collision level and the state of the bike are transmitted via sensors on the motorcycle so that accidents can be reliably recognized and differentiated from typical motorcycle driving situations.
Through both automatic and manual activation, the “intelligent emergency call” sends the vehicle’s coordinates directly to the call center, instead of only connecting the driver with the local rescue coordination center. With the help of this data, the direction of travel can be determined in addition to the accident location so that even hard-to-locate destinations can be reached quickly by the emergency services.
The safety feature is available as standard or as an option for the following models and series in the USA and Canada for model year 2024: F 900 R and XR (optional) K 1600x (standard), R 1250x (standard), R 18 B and Transcontinental (standard), S 1000 R / RR (standard), CE 04 (standard).
