Can-Am Confirms Electric-Motorcycle Lineup, Teases ADV Bike
The Canadian company is set to launch on- and off-road 2-wheel machines.
Days after patents of a new e-bike from Can-Am were leaked, the Canadian company is confirming they are throwing their hat back into the motorcycle ring with an all-electric lineup. And it looks like within the machines teased, they are cooking something for Adventure Riders.
In the teaser video, a shadowy scene with four motorcycles is shown and if you look closely one of the machines appears to be an Adventure Bike sporting knobbies. Can-Am hasn’t released details on the new models yet, but they do confirm “riders can expect these new state-of-the-art electric Can-Am motorcycles to be perfect for everyday commuting and, to stay true to the track & trail heritage of the brand, recreational on- and off-road riding.”
Although Can-Am is known today for their ATV’s and side-by-sides, this is not the brand’s first rodeo with motorcycles. Vintage enthusiasts may remember their 2-wheel roots dating back to 1973 as well as the dominance of their high-performance dirt bikes which snatched several enduro and motocross championships right from the start.
In spite of their success, Can-Am abandoned the motorcycle sector in the 1980’s due to major budget cuts brought on by its parent company Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP). Now, after a 35-year hiatus the Canadian brand is poised to cater to a new generation of riders. “Many of us have very fond memories of riding the early dirt bike models, and now we look forward to building on the rich history of the Can-Am brand to inspire and impress a new generation of motorcyclists and electric vehicle enthusiasts”, said José Boisjoli, President and CEO of BRP.
Can-Am’s venture into the e-bike sector is hardly a surprise though. The brand has not only expressed their commitment to the electrification of several of their vehicles, but in 2019 they purchased Alta Motors — the then manufacturer of one of the top-performing electric dirt bikes before the company went under in 2018.
It will be interesting to see how the intellectual property acquired from Alta is put to fruition. But you might have to be a bit patient. Can-Am says the first models won’t hit the market until mid-2024.
