Published on 06.29.2023
Another BDR-X is coming! This time Backcountry Discovery Routes is getting ready to release the all-new Black Hills BDR-X in South Dakota as part of their series of shorter BDR-style routes that loop. This is the organization’s sixteenth route and the fourth installment in the BDR-X series. To mark the announcement, BDR has released a video trailer to offer a sneak peek of the upcoming film.

We’ve covered what this new “X” route format is all about before but in a nutshell, BDR-Xs are typically 200-500 miles in length, take only a few days to complete, and conveniently take riders back to where they started. These make them a great option for those that don’t have the time to do a full BDR.

The first in the series was the Red Desert in Wyoming, followed by the Pennsylvania Wilds and more recently the Steens Mountain & Alvord Desert in Oregon. Now the non-profit organization is taking this new concept to South Dakota with the confirmed release of the fourth BDR-X route this July in a live YouTube Broadcast. The live stream will include the 30-minute expedition documentary film, the release of the GPS tracks, printable map, and route resources, as well as an exclusive behind-the-scenes look into the route’s creation and inaugural expedition.
