Husqvarna Launches New Norden 901 Expedition Model For 2023

New up-spec’d model gets better suspension, touring upgrades & more.

Published on 03.01.2023

Well, we can’t say we didn’t see this one coming. Since dealers were given a private showing of an up-spec’d Norden 901 prototype last July, leaked images and specs have been making the rounds across the internet. Now Husqvarna is officially confirming the launch of the Norden 901 Expedition ― a new version of the base model featuring premium suspension and an array of other upgrades to make the ride more comfortable and practical during travel.

While the 889cc engine receives no changes, gone is the standard WP APEX suspension replaced by a higher-spec WP XPLOR system (same found on the KTM 890 Adventure R) with 240 mm (9.4 in) of travel front and rear — 20 mm more than the standard Norden 901. This more off-road capable, fully-adjustable suspension gives riders the opportunity to fine-tune the compression, rebound, and preload settings to create a personalized set-up based on their preferences.

Up front, the 48 mm upside-down forks use a split damping function on the open cartridge forks while a sealed hydro-stop offers greater resistance to bottoming-out. Out back, a progressive damping system (PDS), together with the progressive shock spring, performs exceptionally well across rugged terrain. Bottoming resistance is provided by a second piston, which works together with a closed cup (instead of a needle), towards the end of the stroke.

The Norden 901 Expedition sees a wheelbase increase from 1,513 mm to 1,529 mm thanks to the taller suspension. Ground clearance is also boosted from 252 mm (9.9 in) to 270 mm (10.6 in), contributing to a 21 mm (0.8 in) increase in seat height. Husqvarna is also reporting an increase of weight (without fuel) from 204 kg (449.7 lb) to 214.5 kg (472.8 lb).

For more travel comfort, the Norden 901 Expedition is equipped with a new touring windshield, which Husqvarna says is particularly effective at deflecting wind at higher speeds. For early morning starts and especially beneficial for riders exploring colder climates, the bike is also fitted with adjustable heated grips and seat to provide instant warmth.

Improving maintenance ease and travel, a new center stand, and Connectivity Unit are fitted as standard to enhance every adventure. With the Ride Husqvarna Motorcycles app installed onto a smartphone, and with the device paired to the motorcycle’s Connectivity Unit via Bluetooth, riders will benefit from downloadable maps, Turn-by-Turn+ navigation, Call-In, Call-Out, and view real-time traffic information. Music selection and volume can also be controlled safely while riding using the handlebar-mounted buttons.

For travel capability straight from the showroom, the Norden 901 Expedition is fitted with a side bag carrier system made from sturdy tubular steel, as well as a side bag set that integrates perfectly with the bodywork. The bags feature a waterproof roll closure, welded seams and offer a total storage volume of 36 liters. Exclusive to the Norden 901 Expedition is the heavy-duty skid plate which is made from 4 mm thick, laser-cut aluminum and provides ample protection for the engine. The model is completed with a new graphic color scheme.

Looks better now – So it’s 236kg once the crash/bash protection and centrestand are added back on (like the 1190R had std) . Cruise control and quickshifter are how much extra?

Heated grips, seat and the XPLOR suspension for $1,300 more? Fantastic deal! The upgraded suspension really shines when riding hard off road.
