Pirelli Issues Recall On Scorpion Trail II and Other Motorcycle Tires
Multiple defective tires recalled for potential tread separation.

Pirelli is recalling certain Scorpion Trail II along with other motorcycle tires including the Metzeler Tourance Next and Next II. A total of 3,093 tires with various production dates (see table below) may be affected by the recall. Pirelli warns that some of these tires were installed as original equipment on certain Triumph motorcycles and also sold to independent dealers as replacement tires.
According to the defect report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), defective tires may develop irregular wear after a certain mileage, potentially resulting in breakage of the zero degree reinforcement. If this condition is not promptly detected, it may lead to a dangerous situation due to detachment of the tread layer and/or sudden loss of air pressure.
Pirelli states that owners should be wary of warning signs such as perceived tire vibration while riding and other symptoms that can be visually detected, including excessive irregular wear and localized tread deformation in the central area. The tire can also show cracking at the groove base potentially exposing the underlying metal cords, as well as localized broken metal cords at the groove base.
Tires affected by the recall:
Manufacturer | Tire | Production Date |
Pirelli | SCORPION TRAIL II/150/70R18 M/C 70V | JAN 01, 2017 – SEP 30, 2024 |
Metzeler | TOURANCE NEXT 150/70R18 M/C 70V | NOV 30, 2016 – JUN 11, 2024 |
Metzeler | TOURANCE NEXT II 150/70R18 M/C 70V | SEP 01, 2021 – MAY 30, 2024 |
Metzeler | TOURANCE NEXT II Tire Size : 150/70R18 M/C 70W | SEP 01, 2022 – AUG 31, 2024 |
Pirelli says they will introduce a modified tire construction as a solution. The remedy tires will have the TIN date code 4124 (41st week of 2024) or later as follows:
- Metzeler Tourance Next, 150/70R18 M/C 70V — DOT TIN 1EB 0M X033 4124
- Metzeler Tourance Next II, 150/70R18 M/C 70V — DOT TIN 1EB 0M 614L 4124
- Metzeler Tourance Next II, 150/70R18 M/C 70W — DOT TIN 1EB 0M 410P 4124
- Pirelli Scorpion Trail II, 150/70R18 M/C 70V — DOT TIN 1EB 2M X032 4124

How To Get It Fixed
Pirelli will work with Triumph Motorcycles to have replacement tires installed on units that remain in its or its dealers’ inventory prior to delivery to purchasers or lessors, and to identify and notify any owners of vehicles equipped with the subject tires as original equipment.
Letters will be sent to each of the distributors and dealers who purchased tires for the replacement market, directing them to check their inventory to inspect the tire identification number (TIN) to determine if they have any affected tires. Pirelli will also notify all customers for whom they have registration information, along with consumers that their distributors can identify, directing them to visit a Pirelli dealer to have their tires checked.
All tires with a TIN reflecting production during the affected period will be exchanged at no cost to the customer (including labor for mounting and balancing). All recalled tires will be rendered inoperable by the dealer and returned to the Pirelli Warranty Center for proper disposal. This program to provide remedy tires without charge to the owner will be conducted through July 31, 2025.
Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 6, 2024 and there is also the option of contacting Pirelli Customer Service at 1-800-747-3554 about the recall or go to nhtsa.gov.

Wondering about the aftermarket tires!
Are they included? Not?
Hey Jeff, as mentioned in the article Pirelli states the tires were “also sold to independent dealers.” So yes.
Though not one of these affected tires, my Metzler Karoo 4 front has dry rot splits around the bead area. I installed it last year and it has about 5,000 miles on it. What’s up Pirelli/Metzler with your quality?
Continental flat out(pun intended) discontinued their Trail Attack 3, now Pirelli with a recall. Getting hard to find on/off road tires for the big adventure bikes…
I emailed Pirelli UK and received the following – I can confirm at this time we do not have any tyre recall, but It’s a stop sales notification and it’s being assessed as to whether a recall will be necessary but at the moment no timeline for the decision is available by our Head office in Milan.
This recall is for the US. Different countries can have different conditions.
So a delamination is dangerous in the US but not in UK hmmm
@Jimbo, you really don’t get it, do you? Companies can have different sourcing, places of manufacturing, batches etc. depending on the country. That’s why not all safety recalls are global.
I get it all too well but if “different sourcing, places of manufacturing, batches etc. depending on the country” why does the markings on my tyre match those on the recall paperwork?
If you are so concerned about the differences between the US vs UK go ask them.
