Suzuki Recalls V-Strom 800DE Due To Tire Issues

Problems with the rear tire tread have led to a stop ride directive from Suzuki.

Published on 08.05.2024
Suzuki is recalling certain V-Strom 800DE and 800DE Adventure motorcycles due to a problem affecting the tread layer of the stock rear tire. It is estimated that a total of 1,688 units from model year 2023 and 2024 are affected by the safety recall filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall specifically includes models produced between March 15, 2023 and November 20, 2023.
According to the NHTSA filings, affected motorcycles may have been equipped with a rear tire that can develop cracking or other deformation of the tire tread. Under continued use, portions of the tire tread may separate from the tire structure and impact overall vehicle dynamics, increasing the risk of a crash.

Suzuki states that owners should be wary of tread separation warning signs such as increased vibration from the rear wheel and tire. Increased vibration may also be discernible if the tire develops cracking or other deformation of the tread but does not experience tread separation. Accordingly, a Stop Ride recommendation has also been issued if the original rear tire is still mounted. The Japanese manufacturer also stresses the importance of not allowing anyone else to ride your motorcycle until the recall service rear tire has been installed.

Chronology

According to the report, back in May, 2024 Suzuki received two Field Technical Information Reports (FTIRs) from foreign Suzuki distributors regarding rear tire failure complaints affecting Suzuki V-Strom DL800DE motorcycles. As additional incidents continued to be reported, Suzuki investigated the tire supplier’s manufacturing process history but was not able to identify any change that could have caused this condition. By June 17, 2024 Suzuki suspended worldwide shipment and transfers of DL800DE motorcycles and initiated a Field Survey to investigate possible external factors that could lead to the rear tire failure identified in the FTIRs. Due to the increasing number of FTIRs related to rear tire failure that have accrued while this matter continues to be investigated, Suzuki decided to finally start a safety recall in July until the exact cause of the tire failures has been determined and a countermeasure developed.

In referring to the tire, the NHTSA report mentions Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd from Japan as the manufacturer. No specific brand name is given, but Suzuki’s website indicates the Dunlop Trailmax Mixtour Tires are standard on the V-Strom 800 DE.

Solution

According to the safety report, the cause of this issue is still under investigation. When the cause has been determined and a countermeasure applied to component production, customers will be instructed to bring their motorcycle to a Suzuki dealer which will replace the existing rear tire with a new tire that contains the countermeasure action.

A letter informing owners of the safety risk was mailed July 29, 2024. Owners may contact the Suzuki Motor USA customer service at 1-714- 572-1490 and refer to the manufacturer’s number for this recall: 3A03. If your motorcycle is included in this recall and you have paid for repairs to address the defect that led to this recall, Suzuki says you may be eligible for full or partial reimbursement. To apply for reimbursement, you can also contact the Suzuki Motor USA Customer Service number.

Owners may also contact the NHTSA hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to www.nhtsa.gov. The NHTSA recall number is 24V-535.

Everyone needs to know how Suzuki is handling this, because its pretty awful. I’m super disappointed in Suzuki right now. I had my 800de about 2 weeks and this recall came out. The tire suzuki wants to put on won’t come in for another 2 weeks at least, and Suzuki won’t allow the dealership to put the tire I want on it, it has to be the tire Suzuki tells me to put on it because of a technicality with the timing of my purchase and the recall. When it’s all said and done, the dealer will have had my bike for over a month while l’m making payments and paying to insure it. Pretty terrible customer service. The dealer has fought tooth and nail to help me, but Suzuki won’t budge. Very seriously considering using the lemon law and getting a different ADV Bike. Please help spread the word!
