Triumph Confirms Dirt Bikes And Dual Sport Motorcycles Are Coming!
Triumph teams up with two moto legends in new motocross and enduro plans.
Triumph opens a new chapter in its storied history with the announcement of plans to launch a comprehensive line of motocross and enduro motorcycles, which will include dual sport machines. The British firm plans to go racing as well, with a full factory-backed program committed to competing at the highest levels of both Motocross and Enduro championship series.
To aid in this effort, the Hinckley-based manufacturer is enlisting the help of two of the biggest names in off-road racing who will spearhead the project — Motocross legend Ricky Carmichael and five-time Enduro World Champion Iván Cervantes. The two ex-champs will be involved in all aspects of development and testing of the new models, as well as preparation of the new race program.
“This is an incredible opportunity for me to join this historic brand, and I am honored and humbled to be a part of the development and release of their off-road motorcycles,” says Carmichael. “Building something from the ground up is something that really is intriguing to me at this stage of my career. I can’t wait to see the reactions when these models hit the dealer’s showroom floors.”
This is sure to be one of the iconic British brand’s most ambitious moves since coming back from the brink of bankruptcy in the early 90s. The off-road segment is highly competitive with many established players offering models with fingernail-thin differences in suspension, power and weight. No doubt, the recent COVID-fueled boom in demand for off-road models has spurred Triumph to throw their hat in the ring, but development is said to be ‘well underway,’ which suggests the company has been working on this project for some time.
“Today’s announcement marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Triumph brand. We are 100% committed to making a long-lasting impact in this highly competitive and demanding world, with a single-minded ambition to deliver a winning motorcycle line-up for a whole new generation of Triumph riders,” says Triumph CEO, Nick Bloor.
No information has been shared yet on which models will be produced or when they will hit dealer floors, but Triumph says an announcement of the model launch timetable and a reveal of the motorcycles, as well as details on the factory race program, is coming in the next few months — further evidence that this endeavor is in an advanced stage.
We look forward to seeing what Triumph says will be a ‘comprehensive line’ of off-road motorcycles, with Dual Sport machines also in the mix. We’ll likely see the off-road models appear first, which will be the basis for the Dual Sport versions. Less stringent regulations will aid in getting these dirt-only machines to market faster.
Only time will tell how well Britain’s offerings will match up with other high-performance European Dual Sports from KTM, Beta and Husqvarna. But if Triumph’s track record in the Adventure Segment is any indication, we can expect a high-quality machine that is ready to throw down with the best in the category.

That’s awesome news! If they do a 650 thumper dual sport I’ll be all in. I just don’t trust KTM reliability. Triumph is top notch. More options are always better.

Triumph must be really doing good, economically! Developping that bike range, starting with lets say three engines in different sizes like 250, 350 and 500cc is a huge investment starting from scratch. Mainly in a time where the end of the internal combustion engine (sadly) is approaching from the horizon. Wouldn’t an investment in electric drive train make more sense instead of competing with the big offroad players like KTM/Husky, Honda, yamaha, Beta..,?
BMW tried it once with the 450 and we all know how it ended…
The problem is that when your electric vehicle runs out of power in the woods, you can ask the local farmer to sell you a bucket full of electricity.
You can ask to plug it in. Duh.
the bmw was really a pretty god bike,,,dont know why it didnt catch on,,
BMW was a ‘god’ bike? God made a BMW?
Which bmw are you referring to? There are a lot of BMW’s in the adventure market, but if you mean the G450X, I have one and it’s awesome!!
I agree that the timing is interesting I’m curious what they will be doing in regards to electric because it doesn’t take a genius to see the predictable near future, but say all this it seems to me that they are doing it or of the passion of the door.
Doesn’t matter how it’s powered there is always a cost to the environment somewhere, give me petrol all day long. Can’t wait to see the new bikes
I wish them the best of luck but, they sure have an uphill climb on this one. A super competitive market to say the least.
If they come out of the gate with decent performance and couple it with even close to Japanese reliability, KTM has something to contend with. (a pretty low bar for Triumph to hurdle in competing with that particular brand)
I can honestly say that I’ve never been so excited and intrigued for a release. I can’t wait to see what these two legends and Triumph come up with, I’ll probably buy one.
How about an adventure bike for short people. Or at least one that can be adjusted. With technology we have today it shouldn’t be that hard.
Himalayan, CB500X, G650 Sertao, KTM390ADV…to name a few.
Lets hear it for the short people!!!

The new Pan AM has auto ride height adjustable suspension.
Yamahas 700 tenere success may be the reason!! Great dual sport capability. The offroad racing/MX will be a little more difficult. Recall cannondale tried it in the late 90’s, failure. The combination of reliability, low weight, good power, stops, turns, fuel range and suspension are very difficult to achieve! Obviously a 2 stroke would be awesome. You have the best industry advisors, listen to them.
On the triumph site I only read a anonncement about sport enduro and mptocross bikes. Nothing about a dual sport! Do you have more information we didnt know from the internet? Or is the wish stronger than reality?? For me too! When triumph offer a dual sport like ktm 690, but in triumph quality. Than I sell my xt660r and buy one. My wish list, 660ccm, 18 inch back wheel, adjustibal suspension, seat for 2 person and 8000€ 😉
We received this information directly from Triumph Motorcycles America and they confirmed they will be making a dual sport version. That’s all the information we have though at this time.
Thumper, Please. Twins require you wind them up to get to the torque. This keeps me sorta uninterested in the new parallel twins. A big single may be harder to certify Euro5, tho. I dont know.
G650 Sertao discontinued in 2017. Too bad! I want one…
