Ural Issues Recall On Several Of Its Sidecar Models
Defective wheels trigger a recall on five of the brand's sidecar motorcycles.

Irbit Motorworks of America (IMZ) is recalling certain Ural Gear Up, Ural Patrol , Ural Retro, Ural Tourist (T), and Ural cT models due to a wheel related issue. It is estimated that a total of 3,250 units from model years 2015 to 2017 are affected by the recall filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
According to the defect report, affected motorcycles have wheels that were improperly tightened using components supplied by ComStar. Upon further review of customer complaints, it was determined the assembly defect is specific to aluminum rims used in production between 9/15/2011 and 10/3/2017.
Specifically, it was found that the wheel spokes were over-tightened and all wheels installed within those assembly dates may be defective. The NHTSA recall report states that the defect could cause broken and/or split rims, which could lead to wheel lockup increasing the risk of a crash.
Models affected by recall
Make | Model | Year |
Ural | CT | 2015-2017 |
Ural | Gear-Up | 2012-2017 |
Ural | Patrol-T | 2012-2017 |

How To Get It Fixed
Owners of affected models are instructed to call their local authorized Ural dealer as soon as possible to have the recall repair performed. To remedy this defect, dealers will replace the wheels, spokes, tubes, and rim strips, free of charge on all wheels. Replacement wheels are from a new supplier IMZ began using in 2018 and stricter monitoring of assembly has been put in place. This recall excludes wheels previously replaced by warranty and/or under a previous recall.
According to the official NHTSA filing, owner notification letters are expected to start being mailed on August 1, 2022. You may also contact Irbit Motorworks of America’s customer service line at 1-425-702-8484 or check your VIN to see if you are affected by the recall at www.nhtsa.gov.

Is Ural even allowed to import motorcycles at this point? Doubt there will be much demand for Russian motorcycles for the foreseeable future.
Ural moved to Kazakhstan and is no longer from Russia.
Ural is also headquartered here in the USA. The owner practically lives here and they publicly posted they do not support the war. Owners of Urals would still like to ride safe machines. Also, Ural was replacing the wheels for owners prior to the recall at the first sign of any damage. They have been nothing but gentlemen to work with.
If I paid to have a wheel repaired, will Ural reimburse me for the repair? It was repaired several years ago.
Hey William, for questions about the recall contact Irbit Motorworks of America’s customer service line at 1-425-702-8484. Good luck!
