BMW Unveils Specs And Availability Of New F 450 GS

The iconic GS DNA comes to life in a brand new lighter and approachable package.

Published on 11.04.2025

Today at EICMA 2025, BMW Motorrad introduced the long-anticipated F 450 GS, a new entry in its adventure lineup looking to take on the growing competition in the lightweight 400-500cc class. The F 450 GS arrives as an all-new purpose-built platform, bridging the gap between the G 310 GS and F 800/900 GS platforms. And although the platform will launch in four flavors (Basic, Exclusive, Sport and Trophy) the US will only be getting the rugged Trophy variant.

The F 450 GS marks the debut of BMW’s new 420cc parallel-twin engine, developed in collaboration with India’s TVS. Notably, the powerplant is mounted transversely with a 135-degree crankpin offset and paired with a counterbalancer shaft. Matted to a six-speed transmission, BMW says this setup gives the bike a distinctive growl while delivering “a very low vibration level” for the rider.

With a 72 mm bore, 51.6 mm stroke, and a compression ratio of 13.0:1, the powerplant delivers a claimed 48 horsepower at 8,750 rpm and 32 lb-ft of torque at 6,750 rpm. Fuel delivery is managed by an intake manifold injection system paired with BMW’s latest BMS-Z engine management technology. An E-Gas system transmits the rider’s input from the throttle grip sensor directly to the engine control unit, which in turn regulates the throttle valve opening for precise control and responsive performance.

To enhance low-speed control and reduce fatigue off-road, BMW’s new Easy Ride Clutch (ERC) is installed as standard. In combination with the BMW Gear Shift Assist Pro, manual operation of the clutch lever is completely eliminated – from starting off to quick gear changes up or down. The clutch lever, however, remains installed and can be used when needed.

A tubular steel frame integrates the engine as a stressed member, while KYB suspension components—43mm upside-down forks and a central rear shock with progressive damping—offer 7.1 inches of travel front and rear. Braking duties are handled by a Brembo 4-piston front caliper and BMW Motorrad ABS Pro, which remains active even when leaned over. The whole package tips the scale at a claimed 392 lbs (178 kg) wet.

With the launch of the F 450 GS, BMW Motorrad enters an ever more competitive arena populated by lightweight twin-cylinder adventure bikes like the Kawasaki KLE 500, Honda NX500, and CFMoto Ibex 450. And don’t forget the single-cylinder adventure bikes like the KTM 390 Adventure R and Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 that are also in the mix. Will BMW’s smallest GS offer the right blend of versatility, approachability, price and off-road readiness? As this segment continues to evolve, this latest entry from BMW sets the stage for an interesting showdown between the next generation of smaller ADV machines.
