KTM Releases Specs And Availability Of 1390 Super Adventure R
The orange brand’s revamped flagship dirt-focused adventurer finally breaks cover.
KTM has finally unleashed the next-gen 1390 Super Adventure R, featuring some of the changes found on its road-oriented siblings—the S EVO and S—along with several other improvements designed to boost its off-road chops.
Kicking off the upgrades, the KTM 1390 Super Adventure R features an all-new bodywork design, LED lighting, a shorter, more off road-focused windshield, and more storage options. The new model also sees an increase in frame stiffness, improving handling and track stability. A reworked crash bar – fitted as standard – has also been stiffened up to provide better protection thanks to an additional arm towards the engine bracket.
Unlike the S and S EVO, the R variant is also fitted with a more traditional, high-performance suspension setup better suited for dirt, with a 48 mm WP XPLOR split cartridge fork and XPLOR Progressive Damping System (PDS) shock taking care of duties at the rear end. As you’d expect, the flagship R is also equipped with dirt-oriented 21”/18” spoked wheels and longer legs, offering 8.7-inches of suspension travel front and rear.
The Super Adventure R also receives KTM’s new premium electronics package, with an all-new 8” vertical-mounted dashboard. The 8” touchscreen features inductive technology, allowing easy operation – even when wearing thick winter or off-road gloves. The screen also features innovative Anti-reflex, anti-fingerprint, and anti-glare coating which improves overall readability, as well giving riders access to new Ride Modes, built-in Navigation, and Connectivity features.
Rally Mode, which provides maximum power with adjustable slip is available as an optional extra. This mode allows riders to choose the level of traction control intervention and throttle response with up to 9 levels of slip adjustment, which lets riders hoist the front wheel to clear obstacles, while offroad ABS allows the rear to be locked up in tight corners. Other optional tech on the R model includes Adaptive Brake Light, Front Radar, Quickshifter+ and Hill Hold Control.
The new model has also added more stopping power to its arsenal, thanks to an all-new Brembo front master cylinder. This makes for improved brake performance and a sharper ‘bite’ when grabbing a handful of front stoppers.
Rider comfort is improved now that the footrest mounting position is lowered by 8 mm for a wider knee angle, while moving them 10 mm outwards provides better contact and feel when standing on the pegs.
Wider, adjustable, and made of high-strength tapered aluminum, the new handlebars are secured to a reworked upper triple clamp made of lightweight forged aluminum. Beside improved cable guides, the rubber-dampened handlebar mount improves rider comfort over all terrain types, with newly designed handguards providing improved stiffness for more protection.
Like its flagship siblings, engine displacement on the R is increased from 1,300 to 1,350 cc, for a staggering 171 horsepower @ 9,500 rpm and 107 ft-lbs of torque @ 8,000 rpm. That’s up from the outgoing 1290 Super Adventure R’s 160 horsepower @ 9,000 rpm and 102 ft-lbs of torque @ 6500 rpm. Weight has also gone up 6.6 pounds to 509.3 pounds without fuel.
The all-new Camshift technology provides variable-valve timing with two individual cam profiles. At higher revs, the inlet cams shift sideways, opening the valves longer and higher for more gas flow into the cylinder head, which drastically increases performance, while in the lower rev range, the inlet cams have a reduced valve timing and lift. This results in a noticeable increase in rideability in both normal road conditions around town or negotiating tight trails, while providing improved performance on faster, open roads.
Thanks to new, more efficient radiator fans with wings, KTM says cooling has dramatically improved on the 1390 Super Adventure range. A new, more robust valve seat material and new alloy materials help increase thermal conductivity as well, while lateral air outlets guide hot air away from the rider’s knees.
The new 2025 KTM 1390 Super Adventure R will be rolling off the Austrian production line overseas in 2025. However, KTM North America has confirmed the US won’t see the new model until 2026.
