KTM Unveils All-New 890 Adventure Models for 2021

KTM's new line of middleweight ADV Bikes offer more power & performance.

Published on 10.06.2020
WATCH: KTM introduces all-new 890 Adventure R and 890 Adventure R Rally.

KTM just announced their new race-inspired 890 Adventure R and 890 Adventure R Rally models today. The bikes are based on a new LC8c parallel-twin engine, featuring a 90cc increase in displacement from 799c to the 889cc. KTM added both bore and stroke, along with additional compression and 20% more mass at the crank to not only increase power but also enhance the bike’s low-end grunt.

The new 890 engine is rated at 105 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 73.76 ft-lbs of torque @ 6,500 rpm, which is up from the 790’s rating of 95 horsepower @ 8,000 rpm and 64.9 ft-lbs of torque @ 6,600 rpm. To handle the increased horsepower and torque, KTM has also upgraded the clutch with new friction plates and they also made improvements in the optional quickshifter’s functionality.

The all-new 890 Adventure machines aren’t just the 790 Adventure R with a bigger engine though. There is a long list of changes all throughout the bikes for 2021. Starting with the suspension, refinements to the settings have been made front and rear to further dial in its off-road characteristics. Also the cornering ABS and braking system have been upgraded. A new master cylinder is said to improve braking feel and updates to the brake seals and insulation have improved the heat stability as well. Further updates include weight saving changes such as a new aluminum rather than steel steering stem, a lighter subframe, and durability has also been improved with new anodized hubs and a protector for the fuel line.

Read on for more details from KTM about the new 890 Adventure R and 890 Adventure R Rally:

Two years ago, KTM funneled track experience, premium technology and race-inspired design into some of the most versatile and exciting Adventure motorcycles to roll off the brand’s production lines. For 2021 and beyond, KTM is launching the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R RALLY and KTM 890 ADVENTURE R machines; a pair of new bikes based on new engine platforms with more power and torque, which are ready for extreme escapes off the beaten track.

In the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R RALLY, KTM is crafting one of the most desirable Adventure offerings out there thanks to a series of components and settings derived from the efforts of the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Rally team. The data recorded across landscapes around the world has been analyzed and applied directly to the form of the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R RALLY.

Top of the range WP XPLOR Pro Components suspension allows riders to push harder with full adjustability, while the power output of the new 4-stroke, twin, DOHC engine is boosted by an ultra-light Akrapovič silencer. The KTM 890 ADVENTURE R RALLY is truly an unparalleled, specialized motorcycle for the hardcore Adventurer with a number of race-inspired details like specific rally-proven chassis settings, Rally footpegs (larger footprint and mud-free), flat offroad seat, clear screen and winglets, racing graphics, along with Quickshifter+ and RALLY ride mode as standard.

The KTM 890 ADVENTURE R’s new engine generates increased horsepower and torque over the bike’s smaller brother. The crankshaft features 20% more rotating mass and the overall effect of the engineering around the powerplant means a more stable and consistent output, noticeable with low RPM torque. The added mass also means added cornering stability for long distance riding on the throttle. Fully-adjustable WP XPLOR suspension, overhauled ABS software and new traction control algorithms are just three aspects that mold the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R as the company’s refined definition of an exhilarating ‘all-rounder’.

This is definately a significant upgrade from 790adventure. However some would still prefer the tried and tested 790 adventure over 890 adventure R given the price difference.

Please correct me if I’m wrong but I understand production of this model is being shifted to CF Moto in China.

Yes, the KTM 790, 890 and 750 (New lineup) and HQV 901 motorcycles will be made in China and sold globally.

The KTM & HQV 490 LC8c models will be made in India.

Wondering how they managed to make it 7kg heavier (if the numbers are correct), just by increasing bore & stroke a few millimeters and slightly heavier crankshaft?

My 790 R is already ridiculously good and so much better than I am. Can’t imagine the 890!

Nice! looks like the engineers fixed the weak clutch, serious lack of low RPM torque, lack of real hp for tall peeps, the overheating rear brakes and the low rpm stall/jerkiness – cool. Pity gerald.kiska design clung to the wingless-insect ugly oversized headlight mantra in their designer-bubble world where fairings, crash bars and strong bash plates just make your bike look heavy on paper. Over-priced, overly-complex and heavier. fingers crossed for the 901 then.

I think a better move would have been to see a twin engine 500 class KTM Adventure. Bigger is not always better. Personally, I see the ADV industry trending to smaller bikes (at least among the non-Starbucks crowd). YMMV and all that…. Nice looking bike. Too big for me.

I agree totally. Less weight is wat we need. 70 hp is enough.

Yes thats exactly what I use. Even with some soft packs its possible to pick it up if you drop it. And plenty of power foor the kind of riding i do.
