KTM and Husqvarna Issue Recall On Bikes Equipped With TKC80 Tires

Issues with Conti’s TKC80 tires trigger additional recalls for bike manufacturers.

Published on 08.15.2022

KTM and Husqvarna are recalling certain dual sport and ADV models due to potential tire issues. It is estimated that a total of 27,399 bikes from model years 2019-2023 are affected by the recall filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

According to the safety report, affected motorcycles are limited to those that were originally fitted with Continental TKC80 tires from the factory. During an investigation, Continental evaluated and performed endurance testing on several different tire models, including the TKC80. Tests revealed that cracks longer than 3/16 inch may develop in the tread grooves of the TKC80, which triggered a recall by the company.

After being notified of the recall, KTM and Husqvarna identified the affected year and models that were fitted with the TKC80 as a stock tire, then initiated a recall of their own. Neither KTM, Husqvarna or Continental are aware of any field complaints and have not received any reports of property damage or personal injury due to the faulty tires.

What Could Happen

Although groove cracks in the tread discovered during tests appeared superficial and did not propagate into the reinforcing materials of the tires, the NHTSA report states that these cracks can lead to tread separation, which is obviously a big danger for motorcycles.  Affected tires fail to comply with requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 119 (New Pneumatic Tires-Other Than Passenger Cars).

How To Get It Fixed

Dealers will replace the affected tires, free of charge. Notification letters are expected to be mailed September 19, 2022. Owners may contact KTM/Husqvarna customer service at 1-888-985-6090 and reference recall numbers KTB2208 and HTB2207. You may also contact the NHTSA Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or check if your bike is involved in the recall by entering its VIN number at www.nhtsa.gov.

I can’t tell you how many people ditch those tk’s as soon as they get the bike home, lol. At least for the 690’s and under, they’re practically free on craigslist!
