KTM’s Unannounced 1390 Super Adventure Heading To Flat Track?

The next-gen model from the Austrian brand is listed for the upcoming race.

Published on 06.17.2024

AMA Pro Racing is jumping into the ADV arena by adding an all-new class to their Progressive American Flat Track series called AFT AdventureTrackers. The new professional racing class will feature large displacement adventure bikes with engines over 1000cc, and among the approved models for the race AMA Pro Racing lists a bike that is yet-to-be announced — the KTM 1390 Super Adventure.

Although the 1390 Super Adventure has been expected since the Super Duke R made the jump to 1350cc this year, KTM has kept its existence underwraps only going as far as teasing a heavily camouflaged big-bore Adventure bike last week at Erzbergrodeo featuring semi-automatic transmission. Only dubbed the AMT, KTM is yet to confirm the next-gen model so it is surprising to see it officially mentioned by AMA Pro Racing.

So far, the list of approved bikes for the Adventure class includes eleven models (minimum weight requirement is 480 lbs)

  • BMW R 1250 GS
  • BMW R 1300 GS
  • Ducati Multistrada V4 Rally 1158
  • Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250
  • Honda Africa Twin 1100
  • Kawasaki Versys 1000
  • KTM 1290 Super Adventure

  • Suzuki V-STROM 1050
  • Triumph Tiger 1200
  • Yamaha Super Ténéré 1200

AFT AdventureTrackers will require for all adventure bikes competing to be mostly stock with bodywork, engines, frames, swingarms, fuel tanks and other parts unchanged. The rules also state that the transmission internals must remain the same as the homologated model, which would mean we could see the 1390 SA being put to the test in flat track with KTM’s new clutchless technology, assuming it makes it into the production bike. Along the same lines, BMW’s soon-to-be-released automatic shift assistant technology on the R 1300 GS and Honda’s DCT Africa Twin would also be eligible.

The AFT AdventureTrackers will make its high-profile debut as a featured attraction of the inaugural Sturgis TT in Sturgis, South Dakota, on August 11, 2024. The terrain is said to include left and right turns, dirt and asphalt sections, and a jump at least once per lap.

It remains to be seen if KTM will have an official unveiling of the much-anticipated 1390 Super Adventure before the checkered flag drops in Sturgis.
